It's a great purchase! I don't regret buying this lens at all. I got it for $305 with hood from Vivek, here at the forum. It is tack sharp and on a crop body it gives a FOV of a 135mm. The f/1.8 helps in indoor stuff.

The 85 1.8 is pretty much all I use for BB...along with the 135. It is useful in VB....but def. a lens for sports shooters....

i hope you don't mind some comments.

the exposure seems inconsistent. try pre-adjusting the exposure and set it in manual exposure. i find that works best in a indoor gym.

Great lens. You'll love it. It's even a first rate portrait lens to boot!

Onto your shots. The first one is OOF and the "horizon" is tilted. You've stripped the EXIF data (probably by "Save for Web"- one tip when posting for C&C - include your EXIF info) so I don't know if the shot is soft due to low shutter speed or what, but it definitely is not a sharp image.

Oh, also, number the shots so it's easier to comment. :)

The second and third are, as 'smash says, improperly exposed. In this instance, over exposed. Note the back of the "skins"' defender. There is almost no detail in the skin on his back as the highlights are all blown out.

See the histogram of your second shot I posted below? Not only is most of the information on the right side, it's also clipped (the tops of the spikes are cut off) all of which indicates an over-exposed image without even looking at the shot.

Which exposure mode were you using? What were your settings on these? Are you comfortable monitoring your histograms while shooting?

Also, I find the focal length of the 85 is best when used under the basket (as in your first image). It's a little short to be employed from mid-court.

Hope this helps.

I use the 85mm f1.8 often... Only once did I have trouble focusing with it...And that's when the subject ran right at me, and up to me... The nose was out of focus...

John,

At f/1.8, that was probably not a fault of the lens, but more a result of the paper thin depth of field, which is one of the only downsides to this great buy of a lens (used properly, though, the small DOF can be a positive thing).

You're right about that particular moment... I couldn't back up fast enough to keep sufficient distance from the subject... It was a face and upper bod shot...from within 3' feet.
