Last month, I sent my camera to Canon to remove a strand of hair that was underneath the lowpass filter. They cleaned and shipped it back for $40. I was ecstatic! I went out this week, with the great San Francisco weather and shot some pictures at lunch time. When I stopped my lens down to f/11 I noticed that it had some kind of obstruction on the upper left hand corner of the frame. Incidentally, this is where the hair was.

When I got home, I used the Delkin Sensor scope and saw the hair was still there. I then use a loupe and a LED light just to confirm and sure enough it was there.

My question is, how do I make sure that the knuckleheads over at Canon Factory Service do what they are requested to do and do it correctly? I have contacted Canon and they sent me a UPS label and an evaluation request form that states: "Spot appearing at f/8 and higher." I didn't think this was enough info, fearing these guys will clean the low pass on the surface again and send me along my merry way, none the better. So I added, "Spot appearing in photos at f/8 and higher. Spot appears to be hair/dust underneath the sensor."

Take a picture of the hair and circle with a red sharpie and send it with the camera. :)

That can be a bit difficult...Shoot the image from the scope and use my 60mm Macro?

I'd give it try. Can never give them too much information. I sent them my focus test chart photos and that seemed to help somewhat when I had front-focusing issues that weren't fixed the first time.

That happened to me a few months ago. I noticed dust spots and I was too afraid to clean the sensor myself. I sent it to Canon. 3 weeks later came back with AUS120 bill. I went home and took some pictures. I nearly fell of the chair when I saw a black line across my pictures.

I went back to the shop to complain about Canon's QA. The shop person looked inside and confiremd it was a bristle from a brush. Instead of sending it back to Canon again, he simply blew the bristle away with the rest of the dust spots whihc were not there in the first place.

The next time I noticed dust, I took my giotto rocket blower and blasted with air and all's gone :-)

I can't post the pics here unfortunately, the CR2 file losses to much data and the obstruction blurs away into oblivion. I can try to upload the .CR2 file and post a link tonight when I get home. But that was quite a daunting task.

I tried it at first with the 60mm EF-S with the sensorscope, it was hot last night so I was sweating even with the air conditioning. Hard to focus and setup with beads of sweat from your forehead sliding down to your eyes...That's probably TMI.

Well to make a long story short, I tried all three of the macro lenses in my arsenal, EF-S 60mm, Sigma 70mm and the EF 100mm NON-USM. I gave up on trying to shoot the image with the Sensorscope attached, instead I just took off the Sensorscope, and used the 100mm light the inside of the chamber with a pocket LED light and snapped.

Good deal. That'll give them something to go on.

For some reason, your story reminds me of my first attempt to shoot Jupiter through a telescope. :) Do you have one of those LED head lamps -- they're really great for those touchy jobs requiring three hands. And they absorb some of that forehead sweat as a bonus.

Don't worry about posting the shots.

Yeah, in fact I do have headlamps, my wife thinks I'm a complete dork for it, but, oh well. I got to see!

Yep, I also have the Magnifying Visor as well...LOL My kids think I'm going mining when I put the head lights on and the visor just completes the package for being a true dork! LOL;)

Update: Canon took over a week just to find the camera after they received it. Then a technician called me and we talked about the problem at length and then I got the email that they are doing the work for free. I got an email today that it has been shipped back to me and should receive it (according to Fedex tracking) by Monday. I'll let you all know what happens then!

I don't know, the technician told me that he literally had thousands of cameras in the queue. WOW! Maybe that should be a wake call for Canon to open more Service Centers?
