vg especially #4. You can use the pop up flash with that lens for now - good idea to diffuse it with a split ping pong ball.

Thanks Alpha, I have also been eyeballing the 100mm Canon macro. I just got a Sigma 17-70 macro, and am wondering if the 100 will make much more of a difference. The Sigma is an incredible lens. What's one more lens?

Nice shots, and excellent job for first try! You chose aperture well to maximise shutter speed when DOF wasn't necessary with the sideways-on shot of the skipper.
Incidently, the skipper butterfly's sucky thing is a proboscis. Just about all butterflies use them to draw nectar from flowers, and occasionally minerals from damp ground. They cannot take protein, relying on what they ate as larvae. Many moths take nectar in the same way, often at night. I *think* your shot is of a European skipper, known in the UK as an Essex skipper. Note the thickened tips to the antennae; moths don't have this.
