A couple of weeks ago we visited the beautiful State of Maine and I was privileged to take a Puffin/Whale Tour out of Bar Harbor. We went out to Petit Manan Island to see the Puffins and although the seas were relatively calm, it was still a challenge to hold the 100-400 for the shot.

Hey, that boat is getting kind of close ...

Nice shots Carl. I managed to get a similar type shot of a Puffin taking off in the water and turned it into a pano. Will post later.

Beautiful shots!!

I just read an article about how Puffins were nearly extint in Maine years ago, and one person (forget his name..sorry) took it upon himself to re-introduce them. Now, dozens of years later, the Puffin population is alive and well.

I hope I didn't mess that story up too bad.

Nonetheless, thank you for sharing. Great pictures of a unique and beautiful bird.

Hi Mitch, yes, we were on the Puffin/Whale Watch Tour out of Bar Harbor. I got a spot up on the bow and got some nice opportunities for Puffins, Greater Shearwaters, Black Guillemots, Wilson's Storm Petrels, Pomarine Jaegers and Northern Gannets (in addition to the Humpback, Finback and Minke whales!). I have a few other shots I could clean up, the Gannet is probably the next best, but the others are so-so in my opinion due to the difficulty holding the camera steady as we traveled around the Gulf of Maine.

I understand about the difficulty. A good part of my life has been aboard ships or boats, from Navy cruisers to small sail boats. I can't imagine shooting with good results from anything shorter than a couple hundred feet long and then in calm water. Pogo-ing along in a 50 footer has got to be hard. :)
