Does anyone feel that that Sigma 120-300 is NOT worth it's list price?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

It's a good lens for the money, but you should try to buy one used as non-Canon lenses drop a lot of resale value. You can find them for under $1800 if you are patient.

I've been wondering that also.
I would probably have to sell my 100-300mm f/4 to get it. I don't know if it would be worth it , or if I would want to do that.

Depends upon what you'd use it for and how long you plan to own it.

If you need that constant aperture in that range of zoom, IMO after strongly considering it for a few months and checking up on build and IQ, I'd say the price is about perfectly positioned.

Have you seen the POTN archive of shots from it? Pretty darn good.

why wouldnt it be.
Seems general thoughts are its GREAT IQ, fast focus, and built great..300 f2.8 prime is double the price.
You get a Zoom 120-300 2.8 I think its a good value for what it is.

Everything from wildlife (mostly large and small birds, some four legged creatures) and landscapes to sports, primarily soccer.

It wouldn't be something I'd get rid of although I'd probably scrap the 400 5.6 for it.

Oh I've drooled over the archives for about 7 months now.

05Xrunner - some think the price increase has put it over it's value. Way more than half of a 300 2.8 IS price and 100 more than the Sigma 300 prime...

Well it's actually the cheapest production 300mm f/2.8 lens, and it's a zoom at that, so I think that automatically makes it great value :)

I like Sigma4less you save a good bit of money over BH...Everyone complains about they sell imported ones so dont get the longer warranty. I dont really care about that cause if anything happens thats why pay $50 a year to insure the gear..Sure beats paying $500 more for the lens.

I may have asked you this before but how do you get such a good rate and what circumstances are you insured against?

And back OT, has anyone had to return or exchange at Sigma4less? What was the experience like?

i dont know anyone who returned anything. They seem pretty good to me. I bought my Sigma 150 from them and had it in 3days.
My buddy has bought about 4 lens from them as well.

I have state farm insurance. I give them a list of my gear and its retail cost and they give me a price. I also have 2 cars insured with them and my house so i dont know if that helps me as well. The insurance is for ANYTHING that might happen the item will be fully replaced.

I'll have to fill the binder out that my agent sent me...I'm through Farmers though and I don't think the coverage is as good. We'll see.

Man if I only had a dollar for every 120-300 thread I've started.

Well I have had my Sigma for over a year now and feel I am in a position to comment on this thread. In my opinion the Sigma is very much worth the price. For a 2.8 300mm lens it is excellant value for money.

I took some time getting my copy accurate in terms of image quality. It was back and forth to Sigma on several occasions and was a real pain to be honest. County Man bought one at the same time as myself and he was not prepared to persivere returning his lens to Sigma and eventually opted for a refund which I can understand. I did take the time working with Sigma to get the lens spot on and feel it was very much worth while as the lens is right on the moeny in terms of focus accuracy and image quality.

The lens is a solid piece of kit and is heavy to humf around so be prepared for that but what you get is a lens that is great for football and the likes giving you the freedom to cover near and far action, where others with the 300mm prime are switching to another body to use say their 70-200. It handles the canon 1.4TC with ease (cannot comment on the SIgma 1.4TC as I have never used it). I along with others have had great results using it at motorsport and equestrian events. I am also finding it a decent wildlife lens with the 1.4TC fitted.

Would I buy the lens again? Yes without doubt, I cannot afford or justify the Canon 300mm prime, here in the UK the Sigma is half the Canon price so for me their can only ever be one winner. For others this may not be the case.

I have went on for long enough now, IMO the lens is worth the money :)

Hope this has been of some use to you.
Cheers
Ricky

I was just sitting here thinking about when i go to get this lens. Should i go for the 300 2.8 prime since I have the 70-200 but then I dont really like primes much. the IQ is probably better but I like the usefulness of the zoom if i am stuck in 1 location.
Just for kicks has anyone ever used the Sigma 300 prime
