i am going to buy an ultra wide angle lens soon (once i get my tax return)
i was going to get either a 17-40L or sigma 12-24
i visited my local camera shop today and the guy behind the counter told me that the sigma 10-20mm fits all canon cameras, just doesnt fully cover the sensor
so i tried it on my 1dmk2n and there is a tiny bit of vignetting at 10mm and its gone by 12mm
the 10-20 is almost half the price, smaller and lighter than the 12-24 and fits my 1d

so my stupid question is "should i get the cheaper, lighter lens that works or should it pay the extra for the 12-24 ?"
i dont plan on going full frame anytime soon, im happy with the APS-H sensored 1d
is there any real reason to not get the 10-20mm???

Buy whatever range you are looking for. Price and size should be secondary, as you are already luggung around a 1 series body. Neither cheap nor light. To me thay are two completely different lenses.

Heya,

have you had a go of the 17-40? fantastic lens on FF... 22.1mm on your 1 series... so i suppose youve ruled it out. just been to broome and shot a bit with it... keep getting my shadow in the damn pics tho as its so wide :) Left cam in broome though so my old man can shoot while he's on his kimberley cruise. Did you get your 1dIIn from PRA? new or second hand? i remember a while ago when you upgraded but cant remember if it was a newie... your enjoying it im sure...

You pretty much answer your own question. If you can live with a bit of vignetting at10mm then saving $$ sounds like a decent plan.

But if that vignetting will really bug you, then I'd spend for the glass.

I never say overspend, but I do say buy right and buy once.

Good luck!

hmm, i dont think the vignetting will bug me, and it will still work without the vignette on my 350d and my fiancee's new 40d (which she will be purchasing with her tax return)

no i havent had a go with the 17-40 but i have played with the 16-35 on a 5d, nice and wide, but i will lose a lot of that stepping down to the 1.3 crop
yes i got my mk2n from PRA, brand new when they were getting rid of them for $5300 with $750 cashback from canon), makes my 350d feel like a toy
had a play with the 10-20 today this first shot showing the vignette at 10mm should look familiar

and this second one is at 12mm according to the lens markings, but the exif thinks its 11mm, vignette is only very slightly there (no there isnt something wrong with the lens, my fiancee doesnt like me putting photos of her up on the net

while this is true, they both cover a very similar focal length range, both fit and work and the vignette is gone by 12mm with the 10-20mm
i am probably going to get the 10-20, it fits, works, isnt going to get used too much, but i do need a lens that wide for the occasional shot.

thanks for the help guys

Plus,

by most accounts, the newer 10-20 is a much better lens than the older 12-24.

Best regards,
Andy

I used to use a 10-20 on my Mark II all the time. I find the 24-70 fits my wide needs is the only reason I don't use it much anymore. If you've got multiple cameras in the house the 10-20 is the deal.
