I can get lightroom through my college for $99, and ps CS3 for $299! I've never even considered getting ps, always assumed I'd get lightroom, but for $299 it's tempting. In general, what are the functionality differences between the two?

lightroom is a workflow application: take photo's - edit photos - save photos. (in general)

photoshop is a total control application - edit photos, manipulate them, add text, pretty much anything you can think of can be done in photoshop.

I use both extensively. Without this software my images suck quite badly.

Sort of like a photographer taking stuff to Wal-Mart and not having a darkroom.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

I think I'll just start with lightroom, I'll be in school for three years so I'll have the option on ps at anytime. I've been using the bundled Canon software (DPP) and getting decent images, so I imagine lightroom will be quite a step up.

I have both. For routine processing, I use Lightroom. I also like the way it organizes my pics. For photos requiring out of the ordinary work, or extensive creativity I use CS. I too get academic discounts and its great being able to afford both. I found out about LR on this forum and I really love it. For the first time since I got my DSLR, my photos are organized.
