I had a nice starry night tonight so I got the camera, tripod and remote switch, and tried some night photography. Here are my two winners, shot in Raw with the kit lens and then processed in DPP:

30 sec at F8, ISO 400

15 sec at F8, ISO 400

Both shots were brightened in DPP to bring up the stars.

The first shot needs to be tweaked to get the horizon right, it is tilted and it looks a bit blurry.

The second shot ... hmmm not much there for me.

Thanks for sharing.

Comments and crits are much appreciated.

The second one looked better in DPP last night. And on the first one, I don't know whether it's the tripod or the lens. I have a couple of fireworks shots that have a bit of a fisheye look like that one does.

You need a longer exposure, bigger aperture, and higher ISO.

I usually use 30 seconds, f/2.8, ISO 800 or 1600.

Okay, I figured out what the problem with the first one is.... wrong picture. This is the one I meant to post.

Same EXIF info but I actually PPed this one where the other one wasn't. This is why you don't do PP at 12:30 AM.

The horizon still seems to be tilted down to the right. Also, this shot doesn't have a clearly defined subject to attract your attention. At least not mine, sorry!

I think that my tripod may have been the issue. I discovered this morning that one of the feet was extended and the other two were up. So my tripod may have been tilting slightly.

As for the subject, I was trying to get the starry sky over the lake (the lake is barely visible in the bottom of the shot) but the lights on the gazebo were throwing off my exposure. Plus the moon was behind me and there was too much light behind me to try it from the other side of the lake.

You usually fix TILTED horizons in Photoshop.
