Are you buying the 40D with the 28-135 kit lens or not? I was just wondering how many of you are spending the extra $200 for this lens considering it sells for just under $400 by itself?

Oh absolutely. If I were going to buy a 40D, you can bet I'm going to get the 28-135. For $200, it's a great, fun lens.

I guess it depends on if the individual needs the lens or not and can live with it's quality level if it is needed...

For just $200 I'd be all over it. It lacks a bit on the wide end, but the range and IS makes it such a great walk-around lens. The IS has gotten me all spoiled.

I suppose if I didn't already have a 28-135, I'd be interested in buying a 40D with one. I've had the lens since 1999 and it's still my primary lens...

Would it be wrong to sell the lens independently? For a profit?

Absolutely not wrong. It's your lens once you buy it. If you don't plan to sell the 40D for about 6 months or more, sell the lens. If you don't know if you want to return it or not, keep it for 30 days.

It costs around $300+ alone. And really, it's an okay lens. The range is great. But it can't be taken completely seriously for much pro work. I used it for about a year, but then got the 24-70. Now that is WOW!
