Flying and Peli cases... Talk to me.

Anyone with experience of using Peli cases to transport their gear on long haul flights in the hold of the plane have any comments to share? Easy to go over weight limits? Do Peli cases attract thieves? If I sling a load of gear in one (which technically won't be insured as we'll be between living in the UK and New Zealand) is it a high likelihood it will get tampered with?

Thoughts and opinions welcome.

I bought an HPRC case instead of Pelican. IT is lighter and just as secrue if not more. The gear could be thrown out of a moving car in the HPRC case and not be damaged. I am not sure about theft, though......make sure you have a homeowners or renters insurance policy of some sort just in case.

Depends on what overweight is, I thought it was around 65-75 lbs?

A 5010 (which is the largest carry-on) 5D with Grip, 50mm 1.4, 24-70, 70-200 2.8, Tamron 200-500, 580EX and a whole bunch of junk was just under 45lbs.

And yes I'm sure it doesn't go unoticed. But Lowepro is the kiss of death cause everybody knows what their for.

I'm faced with the choice of a Lowepro Vertex 300 as carry on which will fit inside the airline's size restrictions for overhead lockers, but will be overweight (and pray they don't notice), which is also a bag I'll use almost all the time anyway, or a Peli case of some form (or similar) to go in the hold. I refuse point blank to be a)without my camera gear for 8 weeks when I emigrate, and b)to stick it all in cargo container with everything else only for it to sink.

I use TSA locks on my peli 1650. So easy to travel with.

My wife wants to replace all our luggage with pelican cases now. We wore out swissgear luggage in about a year. Wasted money.

If I were to get a peli case would I be able to take it as a carry-on if it met the size requirements?

That could be a classic "Between a rock and a hard place"

If you don't care about looks - also easier to find - Put bumper stickers , Kids stickers , Have kids paint it .
Would you take something that looks like it's a kids or something that a grown-up who cares and has sellable stuff inside ?

You mean decorate it and make it look a bit naff so it doesn't look cared for and therefore have expensive stuff inside?

I'll happily look after your gear down this way, till you're sorted.

I usually carry on all my gear, except my Sigma 120-300 which goes into a suitcase with locks. Nothing to draw attention.

How did you transport all your stuff over? Or am I right in remembering you slimmed down the kit bag for the jaunt to England?

Check out the Calumet watertight cases. I insure my equipment with the airline when I travel.

Having looked at your link, and thought what a great case the WT6840 was, I thought I would have a look at it on Calumets UK site.

Over there in the US, it sells for $199 (about £100)

On their UK site (here http://www.calumetphot​o.co.uk …earch.Search&qu​ery=WT6840) it's selling for a whopping
£286.95 (thats $573.90 more or less) for the same thing!

If the price on the US site is correct - is anyone coming over in the next few weeks?

i can just imagine a pelican case painted white with red polka dots all over it. think about it, if you were stealing something, would you steal something as noticeable as that ?
