Hey Toby,
Why do you diffuse the MR-14EX? Of all the flashes Canon makes that one has the best diffuser plastic -and produces the best light. Diffusing it might make the flash duration too long, and could keep you from getting razor sharp images...

This has annoyed me a few times also, hence my question. Mind you I've only had it a few weeks and like all gear there is a learning curve. I think the ring hilights are a function of the type of reflective surface, yesterday I shot a Jumping Spider and didn't get any halo in the eyes. The day before I shot a dew drop and had a perfect reflection of the flash.

Yes -it depends on the angle of the surface you are photographing. That's why I don't think diffusing it will really make any difference (and the reflections do show in the fly shot)...

Under exposing the image also won't work...
