This is my first attempt at anything macro related. This little guy was about as big as the fingernail on my thumb lol.

if thats your 1st shot im dam impressed..dam bro u done good..i know its not easy shooing butterfly's,try and go out in the morning or night when its cold..they seem to let u get close then and u can get a clear shot..for your 1st shot tho u done good..

Going to go to a local state park tomorrow to try and get some good pictures of wildlife and such. This one was just taken out back as I was testing my new lense. Lovin it so far :D

Good shot - looks like the butterfly was possibly egg-laying. Difficult angle though- much better if the subject is facing towards you slightly (not always possible I know).

Good first post. F20 iso 800, mmm. Think F11-13 would be better you can then lower your iso to maybe 400 so you get less grain/ noise.

As already inimated by others, this is a butterfly not a moth; butterflies have clubbed antennae. I'm not familiar with north American species but it's some sort of hairstreak.
As for the butterfly facing away from you, I agree with Brian but live insects don't always play ball so you have to make the best of what you have. When wings are partly open then shooting from this angle is actually quite attractive as you can then see both the upper and undersides of the wings. It's nicely framed and composed, maybe benefitting from just a bit of a tweak with the levels to bring out the butterfly's wing detail.
