wheres photography in TV???

Here is just an idea that I cant belive hasnt been taken up in this day in age, I have recently seen a computer gamers channel on sky be evolved and change gaming as we know it, there are top competitions, info, game of the week etc etc.

So why nothing on photography? here are the ideas:

+ Top pictures of the week/month entered by amatuer photographers
+ Critics corner
+ Topic of the week, the channel sets a topic ie. windy or motion and viewers go out and capture the topic.
+ camera gear info, top lenses, differences between models and selling charts.
+ photoshop tutorials by pros.
+ Studio for beginners

This list goes on and think about hobbies in general across the globe photography has to be the most popular so your not gonna be short of viewers are you?

What do you think? would you watch such a channel?

It would be a good idea - I think with the current growth of interest in our subject (noticeable in Britain if nowhere else) it would prove to be one of the more successful "hobby" channels.

At the moment you have to get your kicks from some of the extreme sports and science/history channels, which at least have some amazing photography, even if they have no technical content.

Do american cable TV have anything in photography? I was solely speaking on behalf of british TV.

Nothing in the U.S. I've looked plenty of times and have never found anything. I really wish there was. They could make a show called "tips from the pros" and have different types of pros give us tips such as sports, nature, portrait, birding, .... etc.

There must be companies out their looking for ideas for new channels Iv had a look but cant find any, I would definately put this one forward.

There was a show on every Saturday a few ears ago where a photg would take a celeb out to do wildlife pics and he would show them different angles,dof.shutter speed and so on.It was sponsered by canon and they had all the nice equipment but i don't know why it ended.

I remember the show you're talking about. It was on the Outdoor Life network. It was probably cancelled because the viewers were more interested in going out and killing the animals (hunting) rather than taking their pictures.

There was a show on in the U.S. that I haven't seen in a few years where they would go out and photograph and it was always with Canon. I think it may have been called Canon something actually. I used to watch it all the time and was sorry when I could no longer find it.

Computer games/game consoles is a much bigger market than photography. Compare how many computer game stores you see around vs. camera stores. In the mall near me there is 2 gaming stores and zero camera stores.

In the UK, there were some programmes with Tom Ang, where he took three professional photographers, gave them a digital camera and a couple of assignments, then talked through the results. It was part of the BBC's "A Picture of Britain" series - details of the programmes are here.

Many (but not all) of the photographers were digital novices, and the cameras varied. Usually, one photographer got an SLR (typically a 1Ds Mark II and a couple of L zooms), one got a superzoom or high end compact, and one got a consumer compact. The photographers weren't allowed to use their own gear, but some used their own post-processing knowledge (one had a trademark style of collaging a load of pictures in Photoshop - she took a couple of hundred pictures of a church with a fairly basic digital compact, then went through her usual workflow).


Overall, it wasn't of huge interest to those of us who are serious about photography, but it was well enough made and the general public could have learned a lot from it.

personally I'm happy that photography doesn;t get TO much exposure (exposure, haha photography lol, sorry bad joke) anyway I'm happy it isn't to prevalent in the mainstream media, there's already enough kids out there that pick up an SLR at costco or best buy of where ever and think immediatly that they are pro photographers. and yes there are some kids like that around here.

I think it could work the other way personally. Viewers would realize that it isn't just a matter of picking up a camera and shooting. It takes some real practice.
