Spotted these eggs on a callistemon together with what looked like a dead egg laying machine. Turns out it's a female vapourer moth which is flightless- emerges from it's cocoon, mates, lays it's eggs on the cocoon and then dies.

Fascinating life these have Brian, just looked it up in my book. Great shots and the eggs remind me of Bulleyes gobstoppers :-D

I've often wondered how these moths populate new areas. Since the female cannot fly the species is limited to how far she and the larvae can crawl.

Thanks for the comments all- much appreciated.
I was a bit mystified by the sight but guessed it was a flightless moth- Eucera on Wild about Britain ID'd it for me.
RM- yes #1 is a single shot but at less than 1:1.
