Been reading some of the other threads on this but im tempted by the 1DS 111. Its a huge block of dough to spend when im not a professional.
I love wildlife and currently own the 20D which has been a truely superb camera. I want to upgrade and must confess my camera is bolted to my side wherever i go SO can someone guide me please?

Are you limited by the functions of your 20d? Does the 1DS have what you need or will you be paying for many features which you might never use? Can you find a less expensive camera that will suit your needs?(maybe a 5d or wait to see an upgrade for it)

I have been pleased with the 20D but would like some more features.

Being as Canons best camera is now set to be 22mp, I reckon they will make the next 5D 17mp, along with the usual dust removal gimmicky features, possibly a 3" screen but nothing major, I wont be upgrading for some time, I will wait until the 8D :-p

Yeoness - I share your pain! I have a 30D which is actually very good, but I've got a dreadful lusting for a 1Ds3. I'm not kidding here, I actually dream about it. How wierd (or sad??) is that.

I know it wouldn't help my composition at all, I never print anything larger than A3, and I'm not a pro, but I just really want one. There is something about having "the ultimate" that really appeals. I doubt I need a gazillion focus points (the one in the middle does me just fine), and 22mp is just outrageous.

It's a shed-load of cash. £6k here in the UK!! (should be £4k at the current exchange rate so I doubt I'll buy it here). Plus I'll need a 16-35 and a 24-70 as well which will add to the price a touch. But wow, what a camera.

I'd probably have to start doing weddings or suchlike to pay for it, but who cares. I WANT ONE!!!!

Have you thought about just going to the 40d? It would be a good upgrade from the 20d.

I would agree with Stump, I never personally liked the 30D as it just didnt offer that much, im a landscape photographer so you can see my reasons for going FF with the 5D, but if you are into wildlife the 40D would be ideal given its crop factor & is a significant enough upgrade from a 20D.

As a wildlife photographer, you may want to consider that your telephoto lens will not appear to be quite as long as with the 1.6 factor. I think the 1D Mk III is a 1.3 factor, the 1DS MkIII a 1.0 factor.
Just a thought. I love my 20d, and the wifes 30D does not quite get me to replace the 20D, now the 40D? I don't know yet, some improved features, but is it enough to change? I have not decided that yet. Basically the same IQ. The 1D Mk III, well for the price of it, even though I salivate, would buy me the 40D, 50D, 60D, if they follow that sequence. So I may try not to spend it all at one time, spread out will be easier and have newer camera bodies as I go. Actually if I were to spend it all at once, the 500 f4, L IS sure is appealing. :)

He was saying about the 1ds mIII, which is FF 22mp, the 1D Mk III is 10mp & much more affordable, although if I was going for one of those I would go the whole hog & get the 1ds

Don't bother. There will be about 500 people with one person in particualr that will tell you the 5D Mk.II has better image quality.

Kidding aside, you can crop 22mp to 10mp EASILY. You'll get more "reach" with the 1Ds.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Imagine when cameras reach 500mp + no need for long lenses anymore, just CROP away! :p

Well, a 5D (12.8mp) cropped to 1.6x gives roughly 5mp image, so a 22mp cropped to 1.6x would be around 10mp (very roughly of course), 1.3x would be more of course.
