I've owned 3 1Ds Mk.1, 1D Mk.II and have a 1Ds Mk.II right now. I have a large tax return coming in the spring. If I find a spare $3000 laying around I'll go for it.

well i gotta 100-400 and a 1.4 tc 16-35L 24-70L so that surely wil be a good partnership??

Nice glass, now all you need is a good prime or two for that pin sharp photo's. I really like the 24-70, it is a very practical walk-around lens with outstanding IQ for a zoom on a FF body. The 16-35 is going to be very wide on the FF, I actually find 24mm wide enough for me.
The 100-400 is a bit slow but must be one of the most popular zooms for wildlife. Great all rounder, if you have to fly or is a bit cramped for space it is a lifesaver as the big primes together with the bits needed to mount on a tripod take a lot of space.

That's my biggest concern - I don't want to get home and find I have a very exspensive piece of gear taht gives me nothing more than I have with a 5D!!!!

Oh the pain!!!

What would you recommend as a great prime for portrait and studio work?

I have skimmed this thread.. so might be repeating myself.
If you have your camera always by your side, then you might find the extra weight of the 1 series cameras to be a limiting factor.
I have a good friend who is a photographer & has the 1D II with 70-200 2.8 with him at least 4 hours a day. He is experiencing back problems from carrying this beast with him all the time.

I would recommend the 40d for 3 reasons.
1. It is lighter than the 1 series.
2. The 1.6 crop is better for Tele for wildlife (OK I read about the crop)
3. The Live view STEALTH mode is meant to make the camera almost silent for taking photos of wildlife who get scared by any noise. I can't remember reading that the 1D III cameras had that.

I carried a 1Ds and a 70-200 for 12 hours a day in 120f heat. My elbow blew out.

The 40d would have been handy, minor weather sealing (sand/splashes) and light weight. Oh well.

EXCEPT WHEN YOU USE IT LIKE THIS. :D

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

it would a big jump from the 20 to a 1ds III. It has alot of features that I know I don't need so I am not appealed by it. Make sure that it is not just G.A.S. Would you actually use all of the camera or just some features that would be available to you on another body?

It is your money, your life, you do whatever you want with it! Life is made to please ourselves.

It's ok to crop but if you are too far from yoru subject exposure and focus might be off.

Sorry to be a bit thick, but what does G.A.S stand for??
