Had to look it up- they do live in foul water as rat-tailed maggots similar to drone fly larvae. The water in this barrel is pretty foul- It has cleanings from my pond filters in it- I use it for feeding plants.

Just checked that grey object and can only guess that it may be the left overs of a previous egg lay by something else- it's natural whatever it is.
