Got talked into going for a nice walk with the future wife and our dog along the river at the weekend so thought i would try my luck and asked if it would be ok to take the camera with me to take the odd pic or two.

After thinking very carefully about what she would be letting herself in for she submitted to my harmless request and continued getting ready while looking at me bouncing about more than the dog as i ran upstairs to grab the camera.

Well the look on her face was a picture in itself as i appeared in the living room with the MKIII complete with 2xTC and 300 2.8 not forgetting the 20D with a 24-70 just for backup (well you never know it might come in handy).

So off we went and to my disgust not a bird insight for the first 20 minutes not even a duck, well at this point a smug little grin started to appear on her face as i ambled along the bank dragging all this gear which by now had started to make me go a little red in the face trying to keep up with someone being pulled along by a 4 year old dobermann when suddenly my first chance as up from the riverbank appeared a Grey Heron.

Click my first capture of the walk.

Well if i had just of been a bit quicker i might of got more than a pic of him vanishing into the distance and then

Landing rather smugly at a convenient distance to be just out of reach with a smug look on his face as if to say you're going to have to do better than that

So now it was me against an obviously well trained Grey Heron in the art of evasion techniques as used by Special forces i think, but still my time will come so on we walked when along came another opportunity a Great Crested Grebe which i had a little more luck with

And i think he was as interested in me as i was in him

So after this i decided to concentrate on the Stealth Heron that had evaded me so well all afternoon,so like a creeping ninja i set off this time a good distance in front of the now rather bored future wife and dog to commence battle with Stealth Heron till the best man one.

After what seemed like years a familiar shape appeared from amongst the sheep in the field on the opposite bank but he would not evade me this time despite all his stealth.

Now i know there not great but believe me i have never been so happy to get the pics i did and now will look up on the images i see on this forum of BIF with a complete new understanding of just how much goes into getting them in the first place.

Glen, These shots are fantastic even viewing them on my crap monitor at work, I know when I got a BIF shot of a heron 1st time I was ecstatic as well, the Grebe is excellent as well.

Cheers

Wow, nice series, it seems the best opportunities happen when you least expect or are about to give up and go home.
