Looks like MF is a much easier task now than when I was doing it with the 350D's dim VF at f/11....:D

Here's the moon over Manila a few hours ago - 40D + Sigmonster + 2X TC

Nice one Romy, (as always)

Hey, you can see the lunar lander top right... ;)

The live view is certainly going to make astronomical photography and microscopy soooooo much easier.

YES!!!! Remote focus possible with 40D Live View!!!

Thanks all for the comments. Just discovered an interesting point - remote focusing via Live View (posted this at DPR/FM too):

Just tried it on my 100-400 IS, remote focus is possible in Live View if the camera is tethered to a computer.

1. The bare 100-400 IS can be focused remotely, no problem.

2. 100-400 + any wired TC - remote focusing is disabled, as expected.

HOWEVER, with the 100-400 + dumb Tamron 2x TC, remote focus works at f/11....Wowowowww!!!!

I suspect a taped Sigma/Canon 1.4x or 2x would also work, will try this later. It doesn't matter if AF with the untethered camera + TC hunts. As long as the camera at least attempts to AF (even at f/11), remote focus works via Live View!

Hehe.... that means moon craters jumping all over the LCD during physical MF is now a thing of the past....:D

AWESOME information. When I first handled Live View for real that's when I realized manual focusing would finally be possible and perhaps I could buy some nice MF glass on Ebay now.

I haven't dared to hook up to my computer yet, installing new software always makes me nervous (you never know what it's gonna do or not do), so I haven't tried remote LV, but it sounds great, exactly like what I expected.

Product photography also became much easier.. you can now get exactly the DOF you want.

PS: Checked out your gallery and 100-400/2x shots. IQ does suffer with the 2x TC, but still acceptable. I can sorta understand why this combo isn't used with birds but might do what I want it to do :)

Romy,

I've been admiring your work on pbase for some time now. You are a true inspiration. You have some awesome toys and you deffinitely know how to use them. Keep up the great work.

Matt
