If not, what will you shoot with as default? Nuetral or faithful? Not really sure how this works yet, was just wondering if anyone would use this.

Same here, shoot only raw. I use to do both raw+jpeg, but finally just switched to raw as I am never quite happy with the camera jpeg conversion.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

arrgeebee,
It exists on many of the Canon cameras and can be fine tuned to try to give you what you want. ex. the Landscape setting can help keep the blue and greens in landscape photos looking better. I suggest you either figure what type of film you like to simulate or try different settings and fine tuning them to your liking. Or you can do it the more common way, by adjusting the settings after you take the photo in software.
I personally like to fine tune it in the camera instead of later in software. ;)

That's what I figured, so if shooting raw, this settings has no effect, correct? Thanks for the answers! I will also shoot exclusively in RAW once I receive the 40D tomorrow :)

I have hesitated to do so to this point though because my 300D would slow to a crawl when shooting in RAW.

Thanks to all!

I shoot RAW and often use the Landscape picture style for landcape photos. As I quite like the result, I usually resave the image I want to post process to 16bit-Tiff in DPP and apply additional correction in photoshop which is much less work than if I worked from the RAW file.
Sorry that was with my 30D so even if I had 40D, I think I would do the same :)

By the way congrats on your purchase. 40D looks like a great camera!

Thanks Tom. I'm especially excited because some 30D owners are loving the 40D. I can only imagine how much I'll appreciate it coming from the 300D.

Depends how much editing you want to do afterward. I just keep it set at Standard and I play around in DPP. I'm not sure if the Picture Styles really have any effect if using Lightroom or ACR.

Does ANYONE who considers themselves a hobbiest or more ever use them? I never have, and I can't see why I ever would. I have read an article or two that sorta praise their function. It does seem weird that Canon would even put something that seems to be for amateurs on a very expensive piece of equipment used almost exclusively by those who *know* how to take pictures.

Another Vote for RAW. I'll use JPeg medium and sometimes small too, if I'm doing a shoot where the photos will appear on the web, but personally, will always shoot RAW with the 5D.

I messed around with the picture styles, and ended up using neutral or faithful when I was shooting jpegs.

Step back please... I'm armed with a camera...
