Well, I've decided to splurge, and get magazine subscriptions to a couple photography magazines.

There are LOTS out there. Before deciding on which ones, I'll purchase some to compare. But to get me on the right track - I'd love to hear which are your favorite photography magazines, and why?

I intend to steer clear of any that are light on content, and are mostly slick advertisements. I'm interested in meaty content, that covers areas from the art of photography, to technical info, to interviews with the masters and pros - best practices, current events, bios.

I'm more interested in following the travels of a documentary photographer in Iraq than what gear to buy for a studio setup.

Which are your favorites?

Would help to know what country you are in ;)

Or do we assume that you assume we know you are an American because there is nothing beyond that?

EOSAddict,
No, I never think anyone has to "assume" someone's nationality just because they don't offer it! :) Sorry you felt you had to.

If it does help, I live in the United States. Content-wise, I'm interested in more than US-related material. And sure, if there is a kick-butt periodical in the UK, or elsewhere, that publishes/delivers outside of their immediate region, I'm interested in those as well.

Do you ask because your favorite magazine is one that I wouldn't be able to get in the States?

Playboy has nice photos.;) J/K. I get Popular Photography and Shutterbug, and also buy Outdoor Photographer from time to time. I like these, but it depends on your photography interests. Hope this helps.

Sorry.. counts to 10 :) But I was right wasn't I! Afraid it's a bugbear of mine on here. This is NOT a US forum. `Your location is directly relevant to answering your particular question anyway.

My favourite magazine is Practical Photography... whether it's 'kick butt' is another matter ;)

You are lucky! I get one for each season and it gets drooled over...then my wallet curses and gets lighter

I would love to know some tips on a good photography magazine as well, hard to find one not loaded with ads that has only about 5 pages of content. I would love to find one with some good tips and some good galleries/examples.

I am leaning towards outdoor photographer for a starter. American Photo was another that looked like it might be interesting.

Both you can get for an awesome price through Valuemags.com, plus you can get 25% cashback via fatwallet:

My favorite is Popular Photography. Why is it my favorite you ask? Because my FIL get's me a subscription for Christmas every year. Free=Favorite.

But really, the content is kind of water thin. Too many ads. I'll be looking for better also.

Practical Photography is one of my favourites too. That and Digital Camera World. Only because they blow any of the crappy australian photography mags out of the water.

I dont know much about the magazines but one that I did see was "JPG" (?) I think that was it. The photos were really stunning and inspirational. It didnt seem to be an informative mag like all the others but maybe more of a "gallery" of sorts. I dont know the price tag (I assume expensive).

I read a few:-

practical photography
digital photography
outdoor photography

there are quite a few on the uk shelves at the mo and I usually have a flick and see if there is anything in there that looks usefull to me, rather than stick to a particular mag.

I get it at a local store. It is a quarterly publication though.
