So I graduated from the DRebel to the 40D and this menu system and CF stuff is completely new. I'd be interested in what other 40D owners use as user-preferred settings, whether they be factory of changed values. Maybe a sticky once this has substance.

TIA

Don't know about the DRebel, but if you choose, you can still set the 40D to the green box or one of the basic modes and shoot away.

I'm interested in the CF functions others like, and which picture mode people choose. I'm never in green box mode anymore.

CF 4-1, and the same mode you have been using on your Rebel.

Best regards,
Andy

is that what they classify as shutter button/af-on button, and if so the default is "metering and AF start. What should it be?

Yes, that is the one.

And ... well, as it is called the CF-4-1 thread, it is about setting CF 4 to 1 (or less often 2 or 3, as opposed to '0', which is the standard setting).

It means that the camera will not AF when you half-push the shutter button, but rather when you push the '*' button on the rear of the camera with your thumb. Makes separating exposure, AF and composition possible and thus photography much easier IMO.

Best regards,
Andy

The 40D is a bit different than the 10D/20D/30D since it now has a dedicated AF-ON button and the custom functions are labeled a bit differently and have different options.

C.Fn IV-1:
If set to 2: The AF-ON begins focusing and metering. The exposure set at the time the picture is taken. (Personally I think this is the most useful)
If set to 3: The shutter button sets AE lock. The AF-ON controls the focusing.

Another good custom function lets you use the multi-controller button to selected an AF point:
C.Fn III-3 set to 1.
Then, briefly tap AF-ON and tap on the controller to select the AF point.

Julie,

thank you for correcting my mistake.

I have got this set to 3, if it's set to 1 the shutter button focus locks and the AF-On doesn't do anything, if you have it to 3, the AF-On will focus lock and the shutter will only do the metering. For me this is the most useful.

C.Fn III-3
I tried that and hated it

Here is one that's not listed in the manual for that I could see anyway, go to the 2nd blue playback menu option and enable AF Point disp. this will show in red which focus point you are using during play back.

C.Fn IV-3
I have changed that so the set button changes the picture quality. This stops ya from having to press menu and then find it the menu. Just press set and bingo you can change from jpg to raw and all the other options.

Is there a way to set the camera so that the * button does the focusing? My hands seem to small to use the AF-ON button for focusing.
