Any landing you walk away from is a good one. Let's hope he had one of those.

Agreed. Hope he managed to land it and that he's surviving, he's one of our pioneers.

And apparently didn't have a flight plan.

Fly home safely Steve.

Fossett, 63, took off flying a single engine Citabria Super Decathlon heading south, Major Cynthia Ryan, a spokeswoman for the Civil Air Patrol Nevada Wing Mission, said, according to the newspaper.

the info above is from Earthtimes.org

Hope he is OK and just waiting for the rescue.

Jon & I met him when he landed the Global Flyer at Dulles. He is a man that commands attention, that's clear. He is a confident, in control type of guy. If you saw how small the cockpit was in the plane, spending a day or two in that takes a lot of self control and confidence. I hope he is okay. I've never met a daredevil type of person before, he definitely goes to the edge.

Fly home safely Steve.

That's what the FAA always pulls out when it's a GA situation. And it's pretty much meaningless. At least one story says that a friend reported himmissing when he didn't return as scheduled. So he may not have told the FAA, but he told someone, and for VFR, that's all that's necessary. The area he was flying is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas; not terribly easy to spot a small plane in, even if you know exactly what course he was flying and exactly where he went down. And that's without allowing for cross-winds, detours around terrain or weather, or anything else.

He sounds fit enough. Let's hope he knows as much about survival in the area as Bear Grillys.

As painful as this is, he was on my list with the Crocodrile Hunter. I love these guys, but don't just stop expecting them to turn up dead one day, on some routine accident. Irwin in a silly accident, and Fossett may end up lost in a short flight.

One thing I know for sure: Both people knew their odds well while going in, and knew them well while things were going to crap. That counts a bunch to me.

If he was flying a Citabria on an out-and-back, he was probably practicing aerobatics. (Citabria=Airbatic backwards.) In that case he probably found himself in an unrecoverable attitude or had a mechanical failure. I hate to think it.

"I can't die... I went around the world without refueling !!!!"... thunk.

It is sad. I am a horrible mourner, because I tend to get goofy instead of showing sorrow, like most others. This is a good chance to look up his life, he did a bunch of amazing things. 116 World Records, 76 of which still stand !!..

I just heard on the radio that he was out looking for a site that could be used to break the land speed record.
