His web site's now down; a cached copy on Google supports that report though. What's wrong with Bonneville Salt Flats?

Those in the UK and possibly beyond will probably have been aware of the passing of Jane Tomlinson, the woman with terminal cancer who completed so many fundraising challenges in the seven years since her terminal diagnosis, including cycling across America. The BBC report of her death is here (external link).

Some people in the forums may be aware that I'm seriously ill - in my case not cancer but some kind of neuromuscular problem that has developed amongst nearly 14 years of being ill now (and I'm only 32). I was talking with another sick friend yesterday about Jane, and she said that Jane lived her life to the fullest - she lived before she died. That's one of the best things that you can say about anyone. I'm glad, too, that Jane is now at peace after a battle bravely fought; though, of course, I feel for her family and others who were close to her in their loss.

I hope that Steve Fossett is found; apparently there has been no word on whether any EPIRB the plane carried (or he carried personally) has been activated and detected.

I agree with what was said about a flight plan - unless he was planning to go IFR, there was no need for one. He had left some indication of his intentions, it seems, also information where he was intending to land so that there was some idea of when he was overdue. If he was intending to carry out aerial reconnaissance, then he would have been wanting to stay VFR and would have been unlikely to take off if IFR conditions were likely to be found along his route.

Apart from this factual information (as I understand it), it seems wrong to step across into speculation.

If the worst has happened, and Steve has passed, then I hope he will be remembered in a similar sort of way to Jane Tomlinson - that he inspired people. For now, my thoughts are with Steve's family, close friends and associates, also with all those who are searching and investigating what has happened. As with Jane, it's those relationships with nearest and dearest, away from the media, that matter the most.

Steve certainly has lived his life so far to the fullest; may we all aspire to that. That said, despite people like Jane and Steve, greatness doesn't necessarily come along with publicity, awards, fame or fortune. The ways we relate to those closest to us and to those we meet, together with the way we apply ourselves in our work, home lives and voluntary work can all be markers of greatness.

my husband is a mechanic on his helicopter, and had info about the aircraft he was flying at the time of his disappearance. there has also been word but not confirmed that there was a child on board during this flight.
david, you are right. Jane Tomlinson, and steve did extraordinary things in their lives. not only to make other peoples lives better, but sometimes just to set records that no one else has the nerve to do.
we could all learn something from people like jane ans steve.

I find it slightly confusing that neither of his alarms have gone off (the one in the plane that goes off on hard impact), and his watch (started by himself manually). Unless the one he wants to go off has malfunctioned.

I just hope he's not too proud to start the alarm off himself while he's waiting/walking.

You seem to be off by about 3 zeros....he found approximately $1,000 in cash according to all the reports.

Maybe he found $1,000,000 and only reported $1,000.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

In any case, we all knew it was comming but it's still sad. Maybe the Fossett family will have some closure. RIP steve.
