I like #2 as well, and also agree that closeups are better in natural light (up to 1/2 life size) but at 1:1 and higher magnification I prefer a flash. The quality of the light that you get from a flash depends on how you diffuse it...

I too like the 2nd one better. Your diffuser is certainly does a great job ;) I almost always use my flash when taking macros.......maybe because I seldom take photos lower than 1x life size ;)

I normally use flash but try to use natural light for larger bugs (eg butterflies/dragonflie​s), but also like to do natural light shots of smaller bugs if the light is right (ie slightly overcast) you can get some lovely colours then. Taking natural light shots in full sun seems to give worse results than a non- diffused flash.

Excellent shots Brian, I would have picked #1 as the natural light shot lol. I picked up a mating fly shot recently, damn well forgot to put it onto my memory card :( Will post when I remember.
