Early morning lake fog

Took a few shots in the early morning of this canoeist. They didn't come out the way I thought they would, not quite as mysterious as actually being there.

I think that last photo has a lot of potential...Here's me trying my photoshopping at it to give it half the potential it can get >.<

Something seems very strange in #1. Why is the light green of the trees following the borders of the fog and what is about that is pure black?

The fog is over the lake/pond so it's not as if light from the illuminated fog is hitting the trees - the trees would be too far away. I think something might have been done to this image.

I just made adjustments to the brightness and contrast as well as shadow/hightlight.

I think they are great shots. The composition in the first one wouldn't be my choice, but it is still a good pic. The canoe is dead center. McMadKat made a good crop/edit by getting the canoe off center and giving it a space to "travel into". That is how you might have wanted to shoot it.
