??Junk?? The 20d it's self is an out standing camera. Is the photog junk?

I'd definitely say the photographer (me) is junk. But what this photographer lacks in skill, he definitely doesn't make up for in equipment, either! :D

It was internet sarcasm, a bit of self-deprecating humor. I tend to do that a lot. Probably makes people wonder whether I'm serious or not...

I've handled cameras on and off for quite some time, but it's only in the last 3-4 months that I've started to take a really keen interest in the art of photography. So while right now I may be about as skilled a photographer as my 3 month old niece, give me a few months, and I'll be as skilled as my 2 year old nephew!

The 30D takes awesome pictures, as long as it's someone else who's behind it! :-)

I stopped by my local shop here in NJ to pick up some cap keepers. Asked about the 40d. Was surprised that they had the 40d body price the same as everywhere else. Alot of these smaller shops usually have had higher prices. So i immediately put my name on the list for body only. They had only gotten 6 in stock and were gone within hours. They believe they are getting 6-10 more next week. I hope they get down to me on the list.

I'm in Seattle and the 40D has been very difficult to find at any of the reputable online stores such as B&H, Adorama, Ritz Camera, Amazon, and for that matter any other store that does not have restocking fees, grey-market warranties, etc.

"Samy's Camera" web-site currently says "This item has yet to be released by the manufacturer. We are currently accepting pre-orders."

It seems that a few stores received a shipment of 40D's right after Labor Day and sold them very quickly but there have since been no reports of additional stock anywhere. All of the retailers I have spoken to including B&H have no idea when more will come in. I'm OK with paying full retail for the camera but would rather not shell out an additional $110 for local sales tax.

Does anyone else on the forum have any more information on this??

Just follow B&H closely and you'll be able to order one next week I bet. I'm pretty sure of it.

Best Buy all across the U.S. seem to have them in. Some locations are sold out, though. And I read somewhere today that Samy's has them in stock if you CALL ... their website says otherwise!

I have only seen Best Buy selling the 40D along with a 28-135 lens for a price of $1499. If you want that lens, I think that the price is good.

Thanks pixel_junkie - I hope you're right. Most of my gear is from B&H and I've been very happy with their service over the last couple of years. However it has recently been inconvenient to deal with them due to their holiday closures mostly because they stop taking orders through their web-site. One of the cool thing about shopping on the web is that it's available 24x7 even though processing may not be done immediately.

Most competing online retailers are at least taking pre-orders on the 40D whereas B&H can't even email me when they get them in stock. They refuse to let me pre-order the camera and instead want me to call in several times a day in the off chance that I'll get lucky with the timing. Are others bothered by this or is it just me?

I'm in Seattle too, Best Buy in Bellvue had em last I checked, just do the zip code for local pick up thingy.
But I like you prefer B&H, saves at least a $100 and well, I just plain like doing business with them, never got a bad lens or body and if i did they have such great customer care.
Good luck!

Every NY dealer I've spoken with says they are waiting for them.

That's surprising. I would have figured they would have disappeared faster than that. And 150 isn't all that many for a first shipment. Though we should all remember the initial ship date (as provided by Amazon) was September 20.
