I shoot at least halve of my HDR stuff handheld, using Auto-Bracketing in high speed mode and let photomatrix line them up: the results are surprisingly good, consistently to the point that I am no longer surprised. Yup, Photomatrix has been my go to for awhile now. I usually look at all the presets it offers and always tone it down a bit - Compare and contrast if you will. Most of the subjects I've decided to do an HDR shot with have been handheld rather than tri-pod. Always find myself trying too hard and going way overboard when I bring the tri-pod along for said shots. Lately I've been going for that more "natural" look.
