If I were to use my 24-70mm lens on a 5D, at 24mm, how would my image compare to using a 16mm setting on a lens on a 40D?

Would the scene be the same? What would the difference be?

It's tough to decide on ff vs cf when I take pictures of my kids, my young son's soccer games, and I also like landscapes.

Thanks so much,
Karen

That's exactly why I bought the 5D to begin with. I missed the ff, since I own an EOS 3 and had the 20D. 24-70 is not too wide on the 1.6 cropped cameras, if you multiply it 24x1.6 = 38.4mm and is not very wide. Take the 16x1.6 = 25.6mm, still not as wide as the 24 on the ff camera.

times it by 1.6 so a 16 mm on a Crop 1.6 = 25.6mm.

I think that is right

Just remember DOF will be different.
when you use a camera for everything it is a hard choice, I.E sports soccer games, and portraits etc. 5D better for those 40D be better for large soccer fields and extra length on lenses. 40D is closer now to a 5D compared to a 30D and less, just how close is still argued :)

I think a must lens for a 1.6 crop is the 10-22mm, or something similar depending on budget

I agree. By far the most fun/creative lens you could have IMO. Super sharp and great colors too.

So, if you buy the 5D and the 24-70, you're talking around $3500. If you get the 40D with 10-22, $2000.

The main difference will be that the scene will have more wide angle distortion with the 40D than the 5D. While they'll have similar viewing angles, the foreground-background depth will differ in perspective. This is because the focal lengths are different.

If you shoot people up close, such as in a club, the wide angle distortion can be quite problematic.

, and still more
Yea, I've done the math. The 40D with the 10-22 is such a better price and still less than a 5D (I already have the 24-70mm). If I went with that I'd have a new body and lens. But....I'm so drawn to the 5D and have heard great things about it.

As MadProff said, chosing a camera for everything is a hard choice. It sure is.

How am I to decide?

Thanks for the replies,
Karen

If you like wide angle...go with the 5D. You'll have so many more options.

Since I'm beyone the club days of my life, lets say I'm shooting my kids under the Christmas tree in a small room. If I have a 10-22 on a 40D, they may end up with big noses? But if I had an equivalent lens on a 5D they would look normal?

Thanks,
Karen

I do like wide angle, but I also like to shoot my son playing soccer. He's a little boy on a big field and I doubt I'll be getting anything longer than my 70-22 f/2.8. So these's my dilema.

It looks like I'll just need to mull this over for a while longer.

Thanks everyone,
Karen

I believe a cropped body with say a 10-22mm UWA lens is still no match for wideangle photography when compared to a 5D, the border resolution of the UWA lenses leave a lot to be desired.

If your a landscape photographer like I am then the 5D is a perfect choice, if however I was a sports or wildlife photographer, thats when I would choose a 40D or MkIII.
