San Diego POTN Meet Up - Red Bull Air Race 9/21-22

Just saw a commercial for the Red Bull Air Race, high speed stunt flying through an obstacle course, looked like a lot of fun!

Short notice, but it looked like a great opportunity for a POTN Meet up for some fun shooting!

Friday is qualifying, Saturday is the race, kicks off at 11

Im down, i posted up in the FM socal site, no one replied yet (invite only). Looks like a good time to bring out the big guns (100-400 & 70-200) need to put these guys to work. Count me in I will only be able to go on saturday since i work friday. Car should be back up and running by then.

Looks like shooting may be best from Centennial park, which I believe is a free area.

Yes centennial park is looking like a good spot for POTN HQ.

Damn!!! gonna take me at least 2hrs 45 min to get there from my pad. Well looks like i need to leave at 630AM to get there and get a good spot for the day. So we gonna meet up at the park or somewhere else before hand them go to the park?
Who's bringing a monopod? I should have my Kirkphoto LP-41 by tomorrow so i might have to try out my induro monopod for this event.

I should have my Monopod, Manfroto 679 w/a 486RC2 head

Going to take me a while to get out there, around 2 hours.

Im thinking just meeting up at the park would work best, I should be there around 9am, make sure I get a good spot

Darn, I already bought tickets for the South side. Does anyone know if one area is better than the other?

I would think being on the southside would put the sun at your back...

To a degree, but at 11am, the sun is high enough that it shouldnt cause any problems. Southside does look better then the north side, aside that the Start and Finish marks are on the north side.

What spot are free and what spot do you need to pay for? Is there a way of finding out. If the park is free and clear of the sun the it looks like the better spot. What about throughout the day. which way will the sun head towards.

North and South Embarcadaro are the pay spots, with the parks being the free areas. Sun should rise where it says AREA MAP SAN DIEGO and set into the ocean behind Coronado (where the parks are) races start at 11am, sun should be mostly overhead at this point, and as the day progresses (I have no idea how long they go for) will go into the eyes of the people on the Embarcaderos. There is always a chance of the Marine Layer kicking around for a while, dont know for sure.

I, personally, dont think that the sun will cause much problem, shouldnt be near the horizons while the event is going on

If that Centennial Park is a free area, you can be sure that I'll be there. It's look to be by far the best place for watching the races, and for photos (with the Downtown skyline in the background). I want to try and drive out there to Coronado a few days before the race to try and see how they're setting it all up out there.

Can you please update us if you do drive out there and check it out before the race. I was going to head there this weekend but some other things came up.

Word. Thanks Johny. Well I just got back from a car show in irwindale today and got some practice in. So i should be golden by the time Red Bull rolls around. By the way how high do they fly? I hope not high enough for the sun to glare into the zone. So Im down for centennial park. You guys gonna bring some food so you don't loose the prime spot that we get early in the morning. I think that would be the best bet.

Yeah, I'll check the spot out and keep everyone posted on what I find. Hopefully I'll be able to talk to someone there setting up for the event.

I saw a information icon on the map and a parking icon as well as a merchandise booth on that side of the field. I just contacted them through the contact us icon on there page and asked if wee need tickets for th park area or pay for parking. Hopefully will have a response in a few days or even today. Will post info when i know.

Only High Flyer's Lounge tickets come with parking. For all other
hospitality and general admission, parking is separate and will not be
handled by Red Bull Air Race, but by the City of San Diego. I hope
