Legendary Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who brought opera to the masses, died on Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was 71. He lost his year long battle with pancreatic cancer.

RIP Luciano

I hope it's correct Italian to say Arrivederci Maestro. He brought great joy to many, including me, and his encouragement of younger singers was a credit to him.

My thoughts are with his wife, daughters, granddaughter, and all those who were close to him.

David

I have seen him perform live a few times. With the Three tenors (as one), and also by himself, singing with the most melodic voice our Bella Italia has ever seen.

The emotion he poured into each one of his Canzonettas, his Operatic roles. I grew up listening to him, he was the guy on at least half the stuff I listened to growing up, during my first 20 years of life.

Listen to'Caruso' (external link)sang by him. It's hard not to tear up before the end of the song. A great singer, a world class entertainer. (Beautiful and mellancholic piece written by Lucio Dalla).

I will miss his white hankerchief. His Eyebrows, like a graphic equalizer, showing you the level of emotion poured into that particular melody.

MancherĂ² voi, la mia ispirazione e la guida con tanti anni, Luciano.

Una furtiva lagrima (external link)
Negli occhi suoi spunto:
Quelle festosee giovani
Invidiar sembro.
Che piu cercando io vo?
M'ama, lo vedo.
Un solo instante i palpiti
Del suo bel cor sentir!
I miei sospir, confondere
Per poco a' suoi sospir!
Cielo, si puo morir!
Di piu non chiedo.

English Translation

One tear that falls so furtively
from her sweet eyes has just sprung,
as if she envied all the youths
who laughingly passed her right by.
What could I want more than this?

She loves me! I see it.
One moment just to hear her heart,
beating so close next to mine,
to hear my sighs like they were hers,
her sighings as if they were mine!

Heavens, please take me now:
All that I wanted is mine now!

And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.
