I love my 30D but the 40D have two main upgrade thing that bother me with the 30D: the AF precision and the view finder. Even if the camera go to 10mp and so reduce the photosite the high ISO performance remain the same, that's a good point also.

Nothing wrong with the 30D - it's as good as it was before the 40D was announced. Having said that, I have for a while, been considering getting a second body - perhaps a 5D.

Until the performance of the 40D has been thoroughly assessed and established (IQ, and other features), rushing out to buy one seems premature to me. This holds for all photography equipment.

For more demanding subjects, auto focus may never be completely satisfactory simply because it can neither think nor read the photographer's mind; it's making a pre-programmed guess as to what is required in terms of focusing on the right part of the subject.

Do a search and take a look at the pics being shown on some of the sites in low light and at high ISO's. Although the sensor has improved light gathering capabilities ala the Mark III, its smaller size apparently hampers it. Too bad they couldn't have stuck with the larger sensor size and improved its light gathering capabilities. It almost seems like Canon is throttling the 40D's IQ capabilities to keep it from canabalizing the 5D's market.

You really should take a look at Lightstream's thread on the 40D.... I havn't seen anywhere on here that 40D is worse than 30D....

When you say smaller size I assume you mean smaller photosites?

Spouse:"Didn't your camera used to have the buttons across the side dear?"

You: "No, it's always been like that dear, you must be thinking about when I hold it like this (portrait mode)....." ;)

I have a 30D and I love it, however I am a big fan of new technology I'll be getting a 40D because of some features like:

  • Better high ISO performance.
  • Live view
  • 3" screen.
  • DIgic III Processor
  • 14 bit color.
  • Ultrasonic sensor cleaning.

However I'll wait a couple months until the first few production batches are out and tested.

"till after I get my last 2 lens though"

Yeah, right! I wonder how many times I've said/thought, "Well, this is the last lens I'll ever need". It never happens, ain't never gonna happen, let me assure you! A few months or a maybe a year after getting those "last two", another lens will be calling out to you!

I have been going back and forth about upgrading. I use 10D and 30D now, and would prefer to have two identical cameras. 30D serves well (so does the 10D) but the 40D image quality (that I've seen so far), highlight protection, AF accuracy and speed (if true), bigger/brighter viewfinder, interchangeable focus screens and a few other new features make it darned attractive. (Love the wireless file transfer, but not at $1000+ per camera).

Also, IMHO 30D prices (new) still aren't all that much less than 40D, when actually available and if not inflated by some price-gouging retailer. For only $300 additional, 40D currently makes more sense.

To my way of thinking, full frame and 1.6X cameras are two very different animals, serving two different purposes. I can see myself using both eventually. I do not think they are completely interchangeable. 1.6X are most useful in my work right now, but FF may serve other purposes in the future.

In fact, the 40D has some nice improvements, but I'd still really like to see Canon do an even more pro oriented 1.6X camera (ala D300... I'd suggest losing the built-in flash for better weather sealing and perhaps even further improved viewfinder, reassign the print button to something useful like mirror lockup, boost buffer size and processing speed, but keep the format 1.6X). Some people, always wantin' more, more, more!

We'll see!

My 30D works great!

I would wait longer to see the full testing review and others' feedback on 40D.

I'm currently looking for a 30D, I didn't want a 40D. I really didn't feel it was all the much extra compared to the 30D vs price. I have a 10D now and I'm absolutely in love with the 30D.

I really want a 5D or 5DII as a next camera, but I'm still in high school and I'm buying my 30D from a collection of $50 photo shoots and $75 weddings, It would've taken me way to long to reach the goal of a 5D.

I have only just got my first L, My keeper rate has gone through the roof! I am sticking with the 30 and investing in another L. I will stick to the EF lenses and when I upgrade the body it will be to the next level, not next model.

how come it only seems people care about ISO....I think the new focus system is something to be really thought about. personally thats why i want it. i can careless if teh ISO is the same as the 30D cause it did just fine. the Focus sytem, fps, and better viewfinder are the main reasons I want one.

Harp! Harp!

Plus I do weddings so ISO is king to me...

Then maybe you should be shooting with a 5D. ;)

Reading through this thread, it's sooooo funny to hear the reasons in defense of the 30D. When the 30D was introduced, all the 20D loyalist sounded exactly the same! "Canon dropped the ball" "Nikon did sooooo much better with the D200" "Just a few minor upgrades over my beloved 20D" "Just a bigger LCD and spot metering and ISO in 1/3 increments, improved buffer... not much else" "No significant improvement in IQ".... LOL

Most of you will probably be quietly upgrading soon enough. No shame in that. ;)

If i didn't already have a camera, I'd take the 40D over the 30D. But since I own a 30D and the upgrades to the 40D seem minimal to me, it's not worth it to me to upgrade. If the 5D's successor has the features I want, I'll be very tempted then to upgrade :o

I havent bitten on the 40D yet since for most things I do, the 30D/350D combo is more than adequate.
That said, Ive been contemplating on getting a better body and glass for a while now. My first choice of an upgrade was a MkIII but with my priorities shifting, another 30D for backup and one 40D plus glass and flash units may be my avenue of choice - and save a few hundred bucks in the process.
