last night at a softball game, while using a 70-300 f4-5.6 IS lens, canon eos 30D, i was getting a small gold dot in the pictures at about knee high.

whenever i zoomed in and took shots the dot would not appear.

anyone seen this, or do i even need to worry about it. i'm very new at this.

thanks,

pete

Pete, post a picture, it's easier to suggest what it might be if we can see it!

With nothing to look at, all I have is my crystal ball. If the dot went away when zooming, the ball says it's flare.

Reflections from the internal glass surfaces of the lens, usually the result of shooting in the direction of the sun. Even though the sun isn't in a picture, if sunlight falls on the front lens element there's going to be some light bouncing around inside the lens.

the ball fields not only had the field lights, but there were lower street type lights that i did notice in the picture as i was taking the shots. could that produce flare? i'm assuming so.

thanks js,

pete

Street and field lights definitely can cause flare, if that's what you have.

Here are two pics with bad flare - as you can see, I was shooting at about 30 degrees off the direction of the sun in the first one.

Sounds like flare... if it is, the easy solution is to use the lens hood. The hood aborbs the light and prevents it from reflecting off the glass elements.

Did you have some filter on the lens too? Maybe a UV filter?
