Cool shot of an apparently very low flying L-39 Keith. I didn't know about the Patriots airshow team before I saw this. Thanks for sharing.

Ok how about the 1.4? I would hope a whole lot better?

I couldn't get it to auto-focus at the Reno Air Races and it was plenty bright that day. IMO a good sharp shot without the converter can be cropped with good results.

from my previous post...

Here's a sample of salvaging. The resolution of the 100-400 is pretty good :)

I use it all the time with a 1.4x. There are a lot of examples on this thread of shots with the 1.4x. However, you will only get AF with a 1D body, even at the lesser zoom ranges (wider apertures) and with the 1D you only get center spot focus. But all that being said it does a decent job.

Don't think it would've made more sense to zoom in? :D

Keith, did you see that you can't get AF with a TC without a 1D body? That's the big hang-up with this lens and a TC.

I've gotten used to using the 100-400 + 1.4x TC on my 1D3, so it was a bit of a surprise when I popped that combo onto my 5D Classic and found I had to manual focus:)!

Who has time to read the instructions?

Yes, I read up on it before buying. I was thinking that really bright light might be enough to get the AF working- wrong again. That was one of the issues and taping the contacts was interesting, if not scary.

I had the same head-scratching moment the first time I tried my 500 f/4 + 2X on a 40D...

I was out scouting around today for possible places to find some wildlife and such, went up a little dirt road and saw this fellow who managed to stay around as I wrestled with shooting the 1D3 with the 100-400 and a 1.4x TC out the far-side window of the car:

I drove around the Lake Almanor area today looking for a few eagles. They're out in force but I had pretty much given up and was taking some river pics when I see this guy out of the corner of my eye. He landed on the top of a tree across the canyon from me. It was almost like he was a gift.
