Alpine Swift just about to catch a small fly. Captured on a recent holiday in Turkey, where these birds are summer visitors.

Where'd you go? (external link) by Rick Muusers (external link), on Flickr

I have this lens for some time now. Still learning though. Had another fox running towards me and tried to capture that using AI servo, but misfocussed every single shot.

This steady one turned out to be ok :D

AKA The Dust Pump

I have one. It is not a dust pump. Please edit the thread title to remove the false slam.

A bunch of awesome pictures in this thread, now i am left to wonder.... For my T2i. Do i go with this lens? Or the 70-200 F/4L IS USM.... Im not sure i will ever be able to make up my mind. They both have the IS and USM which im particularily keen to as well...

I like the idea of the extra range with this lens.

I guess I have to figure out what im going to be shooting. I especially would like to get into shots of birds, trains, planes, tractors in the distance and other subjects. Both lens could do the job but its just a matter of looking at the pro's con's of each lens i suppose. Somebody help sway my opinion :P

I had a 70-200 F4 IS for a long time. Never felt it suited my purposes. Alway using it at 200mm. I sold it to get the 100-400 and never regretted it once. I use 200-400 waaaaay more than 70-200... But then again, it is a LOT heavier than the F4IS... And larger...

Weight shouldnt be an issue for me.

How about the Image quality, its about the same? I really can't tell the different between looking through this thread and the other thread in image quality, they both are superb. I know you lose .5 of a stop or what not with this lens but i dont think that would matter to much?

If you're the kind that analyses every shot very critically at 100%, you'll notice the 70-200 has the advantage. That said, doesnt mean the 100-400 is not sharp. It is.

The thing is though, it takes a helluvalot effort (for me at least) to really master this lens. 400mm requires fast shutterspeeds, or else your photos will become blurry. Especially handholding a lens of this weight. The IS helps, but just by a bit. I think thats where a lot of horrorstories come from regarding the 100-400's sharpness. It a lot harder to get sharp images @ 400 than it is at 200. Just watch your shutters (settings) and you'll be fine.

And if you stop it down a bit, sharpness improves a bit aswell. But you'll need even more light.
