Rick are you always handholding this lens combo or do you use some support?

I have one. It is not a dust pump. Please edit the thread title to remove the false slam.

He doesn't say it IS a dust pump, but that it's KNOWN AS a dust pump. That's possibly correct. I agree that it isn't actually a dust pump.

Handholding mostly. I dont like to take my tripod on hikes. I only take a tripod if i know i will be stationary for a time.

I dont like the movement restriction a tripod gives me. I like to rotate with my torso instead of a ballhead.

Ditto. I virtually never use a tripod.

I know i can't handhold this lens so I'm thinking of using my monopod...I don't like a tripot either. (now waiting for a good deal on a second hand one).

weird. I would never think to use a tripod or monopod with this lens. I don't have any problem handholding at 1/250sec and any slower than that leaves motion blur in whatever I'm taking a photo of so I don't ever have a need to go lower.

Let's rephrase that, shall we?

Taking pics of bushes or something at wind speed of 0 mph...

Seriously, there are people out there hand holding lenses at really low shutter speeds. I know I cannot.

Weight shouldnt be an issue for me.

How about the Image quality, its about the same? I really can't tell the different between looking through this thread and the other thread in image quality, they both are superb. I know you lose .5 of a stop or what not with this lens but i dont think that would matter to much?

As you can see in my sig, I have both lenses, though my 70-200 is without IS and I don't miss it with that lens at all.

I am using the 100-400 without support 90% of the time. Tripod for moon shots or motor sport, however just to have a resting place for it when not shooting. A mono pod is a very good solution also.

I am using my 70-200 mostly when I want to travel light and on days with over cast sky.

HTH.
