Just joined today. You rotten swines, I joined to learn more before even thinking of buying one! Now, after reading here, it's burning a hole in my pocket! I'm about to purchase one from Scotland via ebay. Unless anyone can advise otherwise. I'll wait a little in case any of you can advise against this, or sell me yours for £200??? Sorry, day-dreaming for a moment there! :D

I'd advise you to buy the 50mm f/1.8 and grab a shot of one of those tigers -- they won't look nearly as menacing:)!

Noooooooo chance. Wouldn't want to get that close.
Bit the bullet & bought a 100-400 on line yesterday £807. Spent second half of yesterday thinking if I've done the right thing or not.

This lens is really a great asset to your kit, ans quite versatile light fast AF, it just suffers in low light, but then so do most tele photo lenses around this price range

It's my most used lens. Sorry about the thin DOF on that second one. It was handheld at 400mm with a macro tube.

A couple more handheld shots, with my 30D and 100-400 @ 400mm. Exif is intact.

Toilet time for the spotted shags. The yellow eyed penguin was taken at 400mm with a 1.4X teleconverter, handheld. He was a long way away! Exif is present but as the pins on the teconverter were taped its presence will not be registered in the exif data.

Just out of interest everyone, what sort of shutter speeds are you able to handhold this lens at and still get a fair amount of keepers?

Hi Jo,

It can depend on many factors, such as steady footing, wind conditions etc. However, 400 mm on my crop body can produce many keepers at 180th sec.
