Just out of interest everyone, what sort of shutter speeds are you able to handhold this lens at and still get a fair amount of keepers?

I just fired off a series of test shots, handheld at 400mm without bracing myself against anything. Shutter speeds were in 1 stop intervals from 1/800 down to 1/25. I've posted the results, with full frames resized to 25% and 100% crops for each image. These were processed from raw files in DPP with sharpening set to 3 out of 10. Exif data is in the images...

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk …STest?authkey=DbutAVudHeQ (external link)

Here are the results at 1/25. I think diffraction softening from the f/36 aperture is more of a problem than camera shake. I did fire off a sequence of 5-6 shots at each shutter speed, and did cherry pick the best from each, but nonetheless, the result here at 1/25 is pretty good. That's 4 stops of stabilisation, and if you factor in the 1.6X crop it's well over 4 stops. One other shot at 1/25 was equally sharp. The other three did show some shake.

Thanks for that - looks like the IS works a charm.

Not incredibly sharp but that was probably user error. Shot of center fielder taken from beside the first base dugout.

judging by the grass and the background it looks like you just missed focus. The timing was awesome though.

Always happy to hear some critique

This is from last year's archives, shot hand-held on a moving ferry on a windy day, so even if it's not the sharpest shot in the world, it says a lot to me about what the lens is capable of!!!

Tonnnnny!!! that 100% crop says a whole hell of a lot about the capability of the lens given the elements youve described! wow

Well, thanks for the compliment! Those were definitely challenging conditions, but those seagulls make such pests of themselves when you're out on open water, you can't help but shoot away!

Thanks Roy....that was the trial run with this new lens..I'm very pleased with it so far. After using the 70-300 IS lens for almost a year...this lens is so very much better IMO. And it seems to perform really well on this XTI.

Wally...this was posted in the bird forum last week. My ps skills lack a great deal, and I was afraid to mess with the picture too much. This is probably the best picture I've made so far and I think the lens made it possible. :)

Crash coarse...no layer for you:lol:

open photo. go to adjustments, curves, the diagonal line across your histogram should read from bottom left(deepest shadows) to top right(brightest highlights). If you click on different parts of the photo you will see a spot appear on the line that where the corresponding tone appears on the line.

you can use the curves presets on top if you want. linear contrast would be your best bet and go from there.

Get you feet wet though. no presets. ON THE GRAPH its split into sections. look to the left, go one section over and click the line, drag down and rightish slow, your shadows will darken (just slide a little to not loose much detail)

Now look at the right side, go one section to the left and grab the line drag it up and leftish, the highlights will brighten with some of the rest of the image. Just tweak that till you like it and use the preview CHECK BOX to switch back and forth to see the difference.;)

Hope this helps Id du it for you but people dont trust people to not steal their work haha and you should learn anyway :D

Thanks Wally....I'll give it a try. Photoshop isn't the easiest program to learn how to use...I'm always open to anyone that's willing to give me direction or hints on using it.

Thanks again

Sharon
