Did get a lot of use out of my rented 100-400 the last few days. Had to send it back today. :(

I do think I'm going to start saving up for one of these things.

My 24-105 was always good, but for a long time I wasn't convinced by it. Then I did some objective comparisons with other lenses and realised just how good it actually was. Last year I travelled from Belize to Boston with too much in my hand baggage. I carried the 5D and 24-105 separately but in the same bag. At some point the bag must have had a knock, as although everything looked fine it wouldn't autofocus - just hunted perpetually. There's one decent camera shop in Boston and I took the ensemble in to them. After a few trials with different lenses and bodies we confirmed it was the lens, so it was sent off to Canon. Cost me somewhere around $140 and they said they replaced a PCB, but the AF is now miraculous. It just snaps into focus instantly, even in poor light - far better than it ever was when it was new. I wonder whether they didn't just repair it, but upgraded it to a current spec from whatever it had been (it's five years old). Makes me wonder about sending my other lenses in for "service" and recalibration, not that I'm aware of any problems with any of them.

Well, Peter, sorry to hear about the damage and the expense, but glad to hear that the lens is up-an-running!

I Think the 24-105 gets flack because it's the "kit" lens for the 5D series, and we all know about kit lenses, right:)?

But it's my favorite walkaround lens with my 5DC, and I'm keeping it and my 100-400 (even though as we all know it's a "dust pump":)) together with my 16-35 as my "kit". Other stuff I'm trying to sell off, hopefully the 85L will be gone by today or tomorrow:(.

Now that Winter Sports are done, time to shake the dust off of this lens. What better way to do that then in Florida over Spring Break. All shot on a 1DIV.

I've no worries about the sharpness of my lens. It's true that it repays some practice and technique, and I'm sure that's the cause of most people's disappointment. Here I shot a close up of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., at the wider end; 120mm at f/8.

Last two shots confirm the potential of the 100-400.

I agree. It's a sweet lens, well worth the cheap price.

Lewis Hamilton in the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne two weeks ago. I had to look through the safety mesh, but the sharpness is still there. I used IS Mode 2 and panned at 1/250s.

Just bought a 5d2, but may also purchase the 100-400. I LOVE the beach and everything to do with it. Just took some photographs of surfers over the weekend and my 70-200 f/4L is just not quite long enough! Saw a gent with the 100-400 though and is swaying me in that direction!

Disaster! My 100-400 has been dropped (not by me) 5 feet onto a stone floor. Landed on the lens mount, and severely distorted it. No other visible damage, but who knows? I can get it from my home in Belize to Philadelphia - does anyone know the best repair center to send it to?

Finally got to take my 'new-to-me' 100-400mm out for a test-drive today. Went to a local park that has water. Shot some people, some birds, some watersport and here's what we got. The 100-400mm on a 5D2:

1. Small child feeding large rat with wings:
