Muttukadu backwaters is a lagoon sheltered from the the Bay of Bengal by a sandbar, about 20 km or so south of Chennai India. I got a ride in a rowboat there and was able to approach the pelicans fairly close without spooking them. All were taken with the 7D and the 100-400L.

These are spot-billed pelicans. I believe they are near-threatened or vulnerable according to IUCN. I saw quite a few of them at Muttukadu, perhaps around 50.

I always enjoy seeing photos of birds in faraway places and I am happy to return the favor. Hope you enjoy them!

Great shots, thanks for sharing.

Great shots, thanks for sharing.

Thank you, my pleasure!

Also saw many painted storks at Muttukadu Backwaters, just south of Chennai, India. This was taken with the 7D + 100-400L from a rowboat, so I could approach a bit closer.

Painted storks are listed as near threatened species by IUCN.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I have that setup but I don't believe I've ever gotten that sharp a picture with it off a tripod. Nice shots all.

Thank you kindly!

Here is a shot of brown pelicans at South Jetty, Clatsop Spit where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. Also taken with the 7D + 100-400L.

Here's a couple more from the North Shore of Oahu, all taken with the 100-400.

Thank you! Sometimes dead flowers don't look too bad.

It was about an hour after sunrise. Dragonflies seem to face the wind, which was just a slight breeze from the South. So I pointed the kayak West and took the shot. The soft morning sun did the rest. It worked out just right that morning.

^ So I gather that is handheld from a kayak? Impressive sharpness for any situation, leave alone how you describe it.

Correct. In calm water I've been able to get several sharp images at 400 mm at shutter speeds down to 1/200. That is pushing it with the 1st generation IS on the 100-400 though.

No caffeine!
