... I just wonder how hard it is going to be to get used to the push / pull zoom compared to all of the others I have.

I have the predecessor 100-300 f/5.6L and I find myself pulling and pushing like a maniac when my 70-200 is mounted...

25 odd years ago I had a Canon A-1 and I bought a Vivitar 80-200(?) just because it was a push/pull. It was one of the very few back then and praised for the ease of use.

You can create some interesting effects also, shooting with a somewhat slow shutter speed and simultaneously pushing the zoom out...lots of fun.

I read a lot of reviews about the lens and I couldn't find a whole lot of negatives. Now that you mentioned it I actually had an old push / pull zoom on for my Pentax K1000 and I did play with the zooming and you can get some really cool effects with it. I totally forgot about it.

I'm getting more and more excited. Hopefully it will impress me so much that I will part with my 70-300 IS to help pay for the new addition to my L family.

Once you get used to it, you will find that the push pull is mandatory for the intended use of this lens, ie: fast paced shooting with a lightweight lens and changing focal length quickly while doing so.

No rotating zoom is as fast or intuitive to use after some practice.

I have to agree! I've gotten so used to using the 100-400 at zoos and my son's outdoor sporting events that I have to retrain myself each time I mount the 70-200.

I'll be ordering this one as soon as the rebates start up next month (if they do). I can't wait. This thread is awesome.

Here's one for you... I got my copy of this lens yesterday, I put it on my camera, turned it on and I got a Card Full message. This when the card was no where near full... I couldn't access any pics on the card. I turned the camera off and back on and it did it again. I pulled the battery and now it seems to be working fine.

Now I'm a little nervous, I've never had any issues with this body (40D) and now something very strange / unusual happens when I put a new lens on for the first time? The lens seems to be working fine but haven't done a lot with it as of yet.

that's kind of odd. My 40D acted up this morning also. I had it on manual clean, with the mirror popped up. I blew it out, and then turned off. When I turned back on, nothing. I had to try a few times before it came on. Kinda scared me. It had never done this before.

I'm totally at home with the zoom style now after a couple of weeks using it, and I love it.
The only thing I'm still not fussed on is the friction setting ring. It's so tricky to get it just how I like it. Having said that, it's only a very minor thing.

+1

To me, it would be nice to have a separate zoom lock setting, that really locks the zoom 100%. If you tighten it up to the max right now, i still have the feeling that it will creep after some time.
In fact I read on another forum that some user used it for this purpose, but in the end his whole zoom friction ring did not work anymore, since some piece of rubber had worn out.
