I would say that sharp photo's are more driven by the lens than the sensor capturing it. Sharp photos are determined by lens characteristics, and focus accuracy.

I'm sure either of those cameras are going to take a sharp picture, provided you can 'tell it' exactly how to.

Well thats easy 1D Mark II N, 40D is nice but 1D is a whole step ahead of the 40D.
Full
weather sealing, fast AF and 8.5fps.

Canon Eos 1D Mark II N | Canon Eos 30D + grip | 50 f/1.4 | 28-135IS | 70-200 f/2.8 L.
I have a terrible case of the L's

I'd up that one to the better shooter.

If you aren't sure which you need, the 40D is cheaper and easier to live with in terms of size/weight/ convenience of auto features/price.

Since my 40D is on order & not in my hands yet I can only speculate, but I do know the lens & the operator will have a far bigger effect on the output than any major difference between the 2 bodies or sensors. Good lenses, good technique, & a thorough understanding of photography & how your camera needs to be used have far more to do with the image you will get than simply buying the next new "super camera". You have a 30D and some good lenses, so can you get the most out of them or do you think a better body will make you a better photographer? Images from a 1Dmklln are extremely hard to tell from those a 20D produces all things being equal. The 1 series bodies however do have weather sealing (never been a problem so far for me, but it may become important some day) and better AF, which I can attest to from personal use, so if the very best AF system is important to you then go that route, but you can buy 2 40D's for the price of 1 1Dmklln (approximately). Watch the user reports before spending since it will take a few weeks for all the new owners to learn how they work, and how to best use the new features. Until then it's not easy to give a valid answer because it is too heavily slanted by hype.

A skill is developed through constant practice with a passion to improve, not bought.

Well I'm actually considering selling my 1Dmk2 to be replaced by a 40D .The 1D is a hell of a camera, a bit too much for me to be honest. Especially considering I can sell my 1D for the price of two 40Ds new. The 40D is very comparable to the 1Dmk2 except for the AF, weathersealing, ergonomics and extra 2fps.

That said, I havent held a 40D yet. The ergonomics of the 1D are amazing as is the build quality. If the 40D can hold up to that, it'll seal the deal.

Why not stick with the 30D and get even more glass?
Getting an ultrawide and maybe a supertelephoto would do wonders to open up possiblities that no body can do.

I don't think there is a great deal in the difference, bewteen these cameras apart from the reasons all ready stated, Lenses, and User, the other difference could be higher keeper rate on the 1 series, hence more better photos, but certainly the 30D and 40D can produce stunning photos that are more than usable in the real world
