I bought a 40d from digital rev, can anyone tell me if they think the mack 5 warranty is also worth getting. a 5 year warranty for £51 seems very good.
I've not heard of mack 5 before.

Will it make it easier if i need to have the camera repaired as Im in the uk

I got a 3 yr warranty with my new 40D as I figured after 5 yrs I'm in for the newest technology anyhow and my 40d value just isn't going to be worth much.

I know not a answer for your question but something to consider since these cameras get updated every 18 mos or so.

I'm also interested and have just emailed the international address they have. I already have Mack warranties on some lenses but I never bothered to look into the logistics of making a claim. I'll post back the response here when I receive it.

I've had my reply from Mack and here it is, word for word....

Dear Customer,

For international repairs, we work with manufacturer authorized repair facilities in your area. Since these facilities constantly change, we ask that customers contact the manufacturer to locate the repair facility closest to where they (you) will be.

Prior to having your equipment serviced, please email international@mackcam.com (external link) and request local service request form. In this email you will need to provide your name, warranty number, brief description of the problem you are experiencing and the name and contact information of your repair facility. The repair facility will need to send us a written estimate (in English) with a clear description of what needs to be repaired on your equipment and the cost. To save time, please have the repair facility reference your control number and name on the estimate. Once we approve the repair for manufacturer defects, we will pay the repair facility directly, or if the facility does not allow payment by Mack Camera, we will reimburse you for the repair with a copy of your paid receipt.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you with an exact turn around time, it all depends on the service center.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you,
Cheryl

Hmm seems reasonable does it not?????

Would like to think there was a contact number though as well, not everyone can access a computer and stay on it for an email everywhere?

If I'm not mistaken, you have to buy the Mack warranty within one month of purchasing the camera, so unless your 1D3 is new enough you may have missed the boat.
I have discovered an interesting variation on the Mack warranty. Here in Israel there are about a half dozen camera stores that purchase their wares in the States or in Hong Kong (grey market) and their prices are way less than cameras from the official importer. Of course the oficial importer won't touch them if repairs are needed, but Israeli law requires that every camera have a warranty. That can be problematic since you don't know who does their repairs and how reliable they are, or even if the store itself will still exist six months from now. However, I found one store that has a deal with Mack and gives a one year Mack warranty, as well as selling the usual 3 and 5 year policies. It solves their problem of having to supply service and is great for me since I get to choose the Canon authorized lab (ther are 3 in the country). I have ordered a 40D from them.

This states they will cover manufacturer defects. What are the odds that it takes more than one year for a manufacturer defect to surface.

Premature shutter failure would be the obvious one.

But for people buying (camera bodies) from Hong Kong for personal import they will have no manufacturer warranty from day one so presumably the Mack warranty is the get out of jail card for those people.

I see where Amazon no longer carries the Mack warranty, they now offer something from a company called: N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Inc.

Anyone heard of this company?

Their claims:

If your product breaks, we fix it. If we can’t fix it, we replace it.
You get two or three years of service protection from the date of purchase:

Get Service in Just 3 StepsStep 1Call customer assistance at

Nationwide service is available from more than 25,000 prescreened service professionals. You can even get in-home service on qualifying products, mirroring the manufacturer's warranty. Our "no lemon" guarantee ensures that if your covered product requires more than three repairs for the same problem, we'll replace it. This plan is transferable at no cost to a new owner if the product is sold or given as a gift. This plan is not available in Maine, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

I purchase the Mack 5 year warranty and sell my bodies in the 4th year with a 1 year transferrable warranty.
Gives the purchaser and I a little peace of mind.
