hey stupid question here:
why does it change to Eval metering automatically in Live View? seems somewhat annoying... or am i missing out on something? (can it be changed back to spot or center metering in live view?)

Desertraptor,
Thanks :)

muscleflex,
Ahh... No, I have taken hundreds of similar sun photos, some with a 1200mm lens and none of my CMOS sensors ever suffered from it. Although I have almost burned out my eyes a few times  but not anymore with live view

haha - well that's all right then! cool image!

great pic and this is a perfect example of why the liveview is a nice feature despite what some of the old school people think :)

I used to be one of those people but have completely changed my mind after seeing photos like this one. I really wish I had live view for the recent lunar eclipse - it would have made focusing so much easier.

FYI ,, Pointing it at the sun with the mirror flipped up for live view is one of the specific things that the manual warns you against doing.

Normally the metering's done from the focusing screen. In LV, there's nothing getting to the focusing screen, so it has to meter off the image sensor. For whatever reason, Canon opted to only use Evaluative, which looks at the whole sensor, rather than one of the other modes, or making all of them available.
