Now I'm trying to figure out which custom function allows me to using the asterick button to focus

I can't seem to figure this out.

Switch the function of the "*" button and the "af-on" button. It is Custom Function IV:2. Choose "enable."

Why do this? The purpose of having the AF-ON button was to iliminate the need for using the * button for focusing, right? This allows your to keep the functionality of the * button, such as FEL and AEL. Plus the AF-ON button is at a more approriate position for handling while shooting.

RedHot, that's true BUT- if you have the battery grip, there is no AF-ON button. I'd rather keep consistency and map the AF-ON to the "*" button, and have the same button on the grip for AF. Shame on Canon for not putting a "AF-ON" button on the BG-E2N. If you switch buttons with that custom function, "AF-ON" become FEL/AEL.

It's camouflage, so when he takes it out in public, no one will see it and won't make stupid comments.

I think it's a matter of button position. As a 30 D user who had the AE lock set up to activate focus, your thumb naturally falls on the AE lock button on the 40D, versus stretching to the AF start button. Since I use AF start more than AE lock, it makes sense for me to switch them and works with my ingrained muscle memory from using the 30D.

OOPs  I mistyped that huh. Ok I corrected it.

The shiny gold stuff on my lens is a lens coat purchased from the POTN shop so when I'm out shooting wildlife that big white lens won't spook the game off when I'm moving around.

Then if I'm moving around I best have some camo on as well huh....

The BG E2 grip fits the 40D much better than it did on my 30D Do you need one Its a choice you need to make I love mine and its really nice for holding the camera for vertical shots it also balances out with my L lenses would I pay extra for the BG E2N grip No its not worth it for that piece of foam if you need that go to a hobby shop get some and install it yourself and pocket the savings

Like Gliderparentntn said, it fits the 40D alot better than in did on the 30D. It seems to fit "tighter", which is a good thing. The BG-E2N costs $100.00 more and the only difference is a little piece of foam on the battery door. THERE IS NO AF-ON BUTTON ON THE BG-E2N! I personally would have paid a hundred bucks extra for that. Here is mine (pretty nice, huh?):

Yes, big shame on Canon. Have you seen the grip for the new sony a700? It basically gives you all the buttons/wheels/joysticks you had while shooting normal horizontal orientation.

The Drebel grip was nice when I bought it for $95 3 years ago, but the 40D and 5D grip sell for over $200 and you don't get much besides the verticle hand holding - just a a couple of buttons and 1 wheel.
