The BG E2 grip fits the 40D much better than it did on my 30D Do you need one Its a choice you need to make I love mine and its really nice for holding the camera for vertical shots it also balances out with my L lenses would I pay extra for the BG E2N grip No its not worth it for that piece of foam if you need that go to a hobby shop get some and install it yourself and pocket the savings

Cheers glider, yeah i def need one - biggish hands and heavy lenses :) and i have one on the 5d and wouldnt be without it. im not fussed on the sealing - the batts from stirlingtek are only $10 and should it get in the drink i dont think the grip will be my worry.

Like Gliderparentntn said, it fits the 40D alot better than in did on the 30D. It seems to fit "tighter", which is a good thing. The BG-E2N costs $100.00 more and the only difference is a little piece of foam on the battery door. THERE IS NO AF-ON BUTTON ON THE BG-E2N! I personally would have paid a hundred bucks extra for that. Here is mine (pretty nice, huh?)

I was thinking the same.... if it was functionally advanced - but it aint so looks like the old model for me... :)

Cheers potn'ers :)

Why do this? The purpose of having the AF-ON button was to iliminate the need for using the * button for focusing, right? This allows your to keep the functionality of the * button, such as FEL and AEL. Plus the AF-ON button is at a more approriate position for handling while shooting.

Actually, in my hands the AF ON button is too small and too far to the left. The * button falls more naturally under the thumb. Do you not find that to be true on your 40D?

Wow, BG-E2N is $80 more than the BG-E2 at B&H??? Everybody is claiming that all they did was put some strips of foam in the N, but is everybody sure that they didn't redesign it to be magnesium alloy like the 5D grip? If not, Canon have reached a new rip-off all time low.

I find that the * is more suited for me rather than the AE on button as well. Be sure and disable the focus on the shutter as well or you'll find yourself when you focus and recompse a shot it'll refocus again.

They reached that with the 70-200/4.0 IS price.

I think the BG-E2n has a different, better-quality covering as well.

Switch the function of the "*" button and the "af-on" button. It is Custom Function IV:2. Choose "enable."

I was thinking the same thing. Of course he is using the grip that belongs to the 30D/20D so that button isn't there.

I think you will find that the new grips do, which would make that change pointless for some.

I think it's a matter of button position. As a 30 D user who had the AE lock set up to activate focus, your thumb naturally falls on the AE lock button on the 40D, versus stretching to the AF start button. Since I use AF start more than AE lock, it makes sense for me to switch them and works with my ingrained muscle memory from using the 30D.

yes and no, you are only talking about moving your finger 5mm at most, wow the energy to do that must be over whelming for some.

On the 10D I used the * for focusing and when I got the 40D I didn't have any issues at all with the changing of the thumb to the AF-On button.

1 hour away and it's wolfe's. I don't feel like dealing with their attitudes about someone not purchasing equipment.

I have held the 40d, just not with the grip.
