Hi went to my favourite site again today found a few Comma butterflies :D
Just found out today that the council are going to develop the site to turn it into a waste processing site
It is a brown field site on the industrial estate but its a brilliant place for butterflies.
Not 100% sure its the same place but the BBC news site said the Grizzled Skipper site on the Wrexham Industrial estate is going to be turned into a waste recycling centre.I am trying to find out more.
I hope it does not happen as its one of the most important sites for grizzled skipper in North Wales
Sorry about the rant but I'm a bit brassed off
heres the Comma
Pete

Nice capture Pete. I had my first one a few weeks ago, lovely butterflies.
Bad news if they do build on the land. Fingers crossed that they don't.

Thanks Brian I was really pleased with this shot I have been trying for a while to get a decent shot of one
I went out today and I saw 3 commas in the same area :D
I'm hoping they dont build on it too I have just read the plan just now they are going to landscape the remaining half of the site and build 3 ponds so they are trying to do the right thing but whether it will be suitable for the skipper butterflies I dont know

Lovely shot of it and its obviously in full colour right now.

Shame about the plans for the site - all you can do is phone and pester and gather everyone you know to do the same. You may or may not get anywhere, but worth a try to get some sort of compromise - you wont know unless you try. I have found that if there is something like this that you feel strongly enough about, you just have to voice your opinion - even get the local Wildlife Trust involved if you have to. Good luck!

Could be worth an email to Butterfly Conservation (http://www.butterfly-conservation.org (external link)). If there's a threatened species there then developers could be thrown out.
Super shot; the late broods should be popping out now ready to overwinter in bramble and other stuff.

Hi thanks everyone :D

Thanks Alby I was lucky with this one got a few shots he even waited for me to change CF card.

Thanks Bill.

Thanks Linda his colours were really bright must have recently emerged.

Thnaks Eccles there was 3 all together hanging round the bramble

I have already emailed Butterfly Conservation Wales and they and The Countryside Council for Wales are fighting the proposal
I have been trying to find out more information and from what I can work out on the map I think it will be on the other side of the road to where I go which is good news.
Butterfly Conservation Wales are worried that not enough of the habitat of the Grizzled Skipper will be left to sustian a viable habitat though.
I'm going to pester the council to death, it seems daft that in trying to be green building a waste recycling centre they are treatening a rare butterfly.

The real problem with UK butterfly habitats is that they are often isolated, so if there is natural predation then there is no means of repopulating a depleted area. Well done on getting this public.
