have you dudes seen drobo?

i know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but a compelling solution nonetheless. worth looking into at least.

wooa! was that a $499 price tag?

a decent external harddrive and a backup software that would do an incremental backup would be just fine. :D

I've read about drogo and the concept is nice, just too expensive right now though. 3 500GB HD's in Raid5 be pretty good but cost is also a factor in that one

norton/symantec products are the biggest pieces of crap ever. i will never install another one of their software ever. all they do is cause is comp slowdowns and problems.

I happen to use terastations by buffalo and their accompanying software for backup solutions. 2tb raid 5 network storage drive ftw

Yes, that too. That's why I suggested to use available software, why spend the extra cash and load on the memory, when there is one already available. Also Symantec products love to "call home". Those of us with Zone Alarm or similar will notice many requests to the internet from their products.

Now...nn the OP's Qu... I use syncback (freeware.. google it) which is superb.. Userconfigurable profiles and each can separately be set to run on schedule or startup.

I have about 20 profiles on my PC to back up to internal and external drives... there is also a full version that costs a few $ if you want.

If you read further into the "debate" the "blood-pressure" commentary has taken the natural course of civility. Thank you for the reminder, though.

Now on to Synback, what features are "locked" on the freeware version vs the registered copy? Thanks.

I have no idea since the freeware is more than enough for me and I guess most people.

Jeff
Just a point about your external drive, I've had problems with Seagate external drive developing read/write errors after a short period of use. Two separate drives, both about 6 months old, both sat in the vertical position. Fortunatly, both replaced under warrenty but their new recommendations is to have them horizontal and not on 24/7.

I back-up daily by just turning the drive on and bounce-back express does an auto incremental back-up. Then I remove the drive. Not sure about the WD ones but its a point worth considering.

Seagate has not been the most reliable lately, look into the WD (BOOK), that works real well. Iomega's externals have been pretty good as far as reliability.

I've been using AlwaysSync for a few years now and it works great. It only copies the files that have change which makes the sync time much quicker. I'm not sure if you can set it up to do automatic sync's in the night.

Best of all it's free.....

Some suggested I try SyncToy by microsoft. It's free and so far it has worked great. I just use windows scheduler to run it every night.
