Shutter Speed Question

If I set my Canon 10D (i know I need to upgrade) to Manual Mode and set the Shutter Speed to anything above 1/200 it automatically sets it to 1/200. It only happens when I use the 430ex. Is this because 430ex is not fast enough for any shutter speeds above 200? I hope this question makes sense and I am sorry if it's a dumb question!
Thanks

That would be the maximum sync speed of your camera.

Because of the way the shutter works, it has a maximum speed at which flash can be used. On that camera it's 1/200. But if you set the 430EX in High Speed Sync mode, you can use any shutter speed. More detailed info here.

Upgrade? What for? It's a great camera. Lots of pros made lots of money with the 10D.

I just received a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM Lens from B&H today and was doing some test with my 10D. It looks like my best pictures were TV-1/60, AV-4.0 and ISO-400. When I shot in ISO-100 or AV-2.8 they don't look as good. This was a rough test at 200mm, inside my family room. I couldn't wait until tomorrow to shoot my new lens.
The picture on top is 1/60, 4.0, 400.
The picture on the bottom is 1/200, 2.8, 100.
No PP was done.

First, almost any lens out there will be sharper when it's stopped down one or two stops from wide open. Second, the DoF of the 70-200 at 200 mm and about, what, 6 ft?, is very shallow, so the overall image appearance will be soft (0.32" at f/2.8; 0.45" at f/4). So it's not surprising that f/4 appears sharper.

Did you try setting the camera at manual, f/4 and 1/60, shooting at both ISO 100 and ISO 400 and comparing the results? With the flash on E-TTL, you'll be comparing just the ISO difference.

Actually I just sold my 10D and my kit lens. I currently don't have anything to use. My neighbor was really needing a camera setup to shoot his twins pee-wee football game so I sold him my 10D. I know what your thinking. But don't worry I will survive for a couple of weeks.

Now my dilemma is what camera to buy. Right now the only thing I have is a 1gb flash card, BP-511 Battery, Bag, Monopod and Tripod, Remote Switch, 430Ex, and my new 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens.

My neighbor paid me $700.00 for my old setup so if I want the new 40D then I am half way there. (if I get the kit)

What do you all think? I am really considering getting the 40D kit once available and putting the rest on my credit card. I have to have a camera you know!
