This is from the 40D white paper:

"Although the EOS 40D’s single-piece CMOS sensor is based on the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi’s sensor design and manufacturing technology, new processes were incorporated in the CMOS semiconductor fabrication and microlens-forming process. By improving light-collecting efficiency, the same ISO range and low noise (S/N ratio) as that of the EOS 30D were attained even though the pixels on the 30D are larger."

So, according to Canon, 40D noise levels are in tune with those of the 30D and not the 5D.
If I'm misinterpreting this, correct me, and by all means fell free to call me "technically challenge" because I am:)

No you are correct :) and by the look of it you are also much less "technically challenged" then the number of people incorrectly conducting 40D vs 5D noise level comparisons and then drawing ridiculous conclusions from them.

After owning this camera for 24 hour and 800 pictures I can tell you for sure.
The noise levels is NOT on pair with the 5D, not even close. I'm not sure it's even up to pair with my 20D and yes, I am a bit dissapointed with that.
The AF is another story, greatly improved.

just take a look at the japanese 40d/30d/400d site, 40d and 400d should have same noise pattern more or less, yet it looks more like a 30d. i believe that it is actually slightly worse than the 30d in terms of amount, but better in actual noise pattern. however, it is very behind a 1d or 5d in terms of noise and noisetype. you can't expect something amazing all the time...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Another thread on here shows that the noise from a 40D is pretty close to the 400D, I never heard anyone saying a 400D can match a 5D for low noise, so I guess that goes for a 40D too ;-)a

Noise levels should be close to the 400 as they share the same sensor.

This isn't what is stated in the white paper. The 40D sensor is essentially an upgraded version of the 400D sensor. It's not the same sensor.

Ain't that the point?;)

Listen, at the end of the road, it really doesn't matter what canon says or writes. There is always going to be someone unhappy on in disagreenment.
I posted that info to validate one side of the argument, not to challenge the other.

The fact is that noise levels are also affected by different factors, ie: exposure, ambient tempeture, sharpeness to name a few, so in a not so ideal world you will have (noisewise) better and worse 5D shots as well as better and worse 30D/20D shots.

Also, individual perception plays a good part into it. I've read posts of a one picture were the range goes from "this is crap" to "it looks better than the 5D". I've had shots a 1600 with my 30D that looked very clean to me and some at 800 that looked crappy. The same goes with my XT.

You can't judge the 40D on noise performance only (which I consider good). Some people expected to be the mother of all cameras at a really good price. It has some other stuff that is very appealing to me, so yes, I'm gonna get me one!!
